How we handle bath re-enamelling in Jewellery Quarter

Cast iron and steel baths are ideal for re-enamelling, and we can resurface acrylic baths as well. You end up with a smooth, glossy surface. We’re often asked to fix enamel that’s lost its shine and feels rough and staining under the taps and around the waste, on cast iron baths, basins & shower trays and acrylic baths.

Different materials, different repairs

Pressed steel

Steel baths re-enamel well, once any rust has been treated. Steel often rusts by the plughole, so we check it carefully.

Roll-top and period baths

Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, and the outside can be refinished too.

Aftercare tips

Much of the damage we repair could have been avoided. A few tips:

  • Avoid suction-cup mats
  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent
  • Wash away dyes and oils after use
  • Have chips seen to early

The first few days matter most: let it cure fully, then use mild cleaners only. After that, no abrasives and no suction mats.

Leave a peeling coating alone. Moisture gets underneath and makes it worse, so have it stripped and resurfaced.

Landlord and trade work in Jewellery Quarter

Builders, developers and site managers book us for snagging repairs, fixing chips and scratches before handover so nothing needs replacing. We hold CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accreditations.

Housing associations and facilities teams use us for planned and reactive repairs. A repair avoids taking out and refitting, which is easier on the people living there.

What a repair can’t fix

A few problems are outside what a surface repair can do:

  • Steel that has corroded right through
  • An acrylic bath that flexes badly underfoot
  • Plumbing leaks, which need a plumber

Should you replace it?

If the bath is sound, re-enamelling is typically much cheaper than replacing it, when you count removal, plumbing, tiling and decorating. It’s also far quicker. Our bath re-enamelling starts from £350. It helps to know what pushes a price up or down: access, material, the extent of the damage and whether we can do several items together. Send pictures and you will get a fixed figure.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can make a small mark look better. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface is not prepared the repair won’t last.

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Getting it right first time is typically cheaper.

What we do, step by step

On the day itself, there is little for you to do. Show us the job, point us to the room, and we’ll take it from there. Most visits take most of the day, tidy-up included.

  1. We check the bath and agree the finish with you.
  2. Taps, tiles and the floor are masked off.
  3. The bath is degreased, repaired and keyed.
  4. Primer and finish coats are applied.
  5. The masking comes off, we tidy up and tell you when it can be used.

How to prepare

  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Tell us about any previous repairs or coatings
  • Open a window if you can
