What affects the cost of a bath repair?

The factors that decide the price, and how to get an accurate fixed quote without a visit.

How we price

Our repairs start from £95 and full bath resurfacing from £350. We give a fixed price for each job, confirmed with your quote. We base it on photos of the damage and the whole bath, so there are no surprises on the day.

What makes a repair cost more or less

  • Type of damage. A single chip is quicker than a crack that needs reinforcing or a hole in acrylic.
  • Number of repairs. Several chips on one visit cost less than separate visits.
  • Rust. Rust under the enamel has to be removed and sealed before filling.
  • Access. Acrylic cracks need access underneath, and awkward spots take longer.
  • Colour. Coloured baths take more matching than white.

What makes re-enamelling cost more or less

  • The size and type of bath, such as a standard bath or a large roll-top that needs the outside done too.
  • Whether a previous coating has to be stripped first.
  • Whether you choose the standard finish or an extra day of filling for a smoother finish on deeply pitted enamel.
  • Adding a basin or shower tray on the same visit.

Getting an accurate quote

Send two or three clear photos: one close-up of each area of damage, and one of the whole bath. Tell us what it’s made of if you know (here’s how to check) and your postcode. We’ll reply with a fixed price.

Typical jobs and where they sit

Every job is priced from photos, but most fall into a few groups:

  • A single chip on a white bath, with no rust, is the simplest repair and sits at the start of our range, from £95.
  • Several chips on the same bath, or a chip on the bath and one on the basin, are quoted together. Doing them on one visit costs less than booking them separately because the travel, set-up and curing time are shared.
  • A rust spot around the plughole or under the taps takes longer because the rust has to be cut back to clean metal and sealed before it is filled.
  • A crack or hole in an acrylic bath needs reinforcing from underneath, so it takes longer than a chip and depends on access behind the bath panel.
  • Full re-enamelling or resurfacing starts from £350 for a bath and takes most of a day.

What isn’t usually included

A good quote should be clear about what it covers. Things that are normally separate, or need to be mentioned when you ask for a price, include:

  • Plumbing work, such as replacing a leaking waste or tap. We repair the surface; a plumber deals with the fittings.
  • Re-tiling or replacing grout. We work around tiles without disturbing them, but we don’t re-tile.
  • Moving a bath, or work on the bath’s support or frame beyond what the repair needs. If an acrylic bath flexes because its feet are loose, we’ll tell you.
  • Stripping a failed coating from another company. It can be done, but it adds time, so tell us if your bath has been resurfaced before.

Why cheap quotes can cost more

The cheapest way to fill a chip is to put filler over it without dealing with what’s underneath. On steel and cast iron baths that often means rust keeps spreading under the repair until it lifts, and on acrylic baths a crack filled only from the top keeps moving and reopens. A repair that fails within months has to be cut out and done again, so it ends up costing more than one done properly the first time.

When you compare quotes, ask how the company deals with rust, how it supports cracks, how it matches the colour, and what happens if the repair fails. Our hiring checklist covers the rest.

Repair, resurface or replace: comparing the real cost

A repair or resurface is priced as a single job. A replacement bath usually brings other costs with it: taking out the old bath, a plumber to disconnect and reconnect it, a new panel and often new taps, and repairing tiles and flooring disturbed during removal. Cast iron baths are very heavy, so removal and disposal can be a job in itself, especially upstairs.

That’s why a repair or resurface is usually cheaper whenever the bath itself is sound. We compare published figures in resurfacing vs replacement cost.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Group the jobs. If the shower tray, basin or worktop also has damage, get them quoted together.
  • Act early. A small chip on enamel is quicker to fix than the same chip after rust has spread around it.
  • Send good photos. A clear close-up and a photo of the whole bath let us price accurately, so there’s no need for a survey visit.
  • Avoid a failed DIY attempt first. Old kit filler has to be removed before we can repair properly, which adds time.

For landlords, agents and builders

If you look after several properties, send photos for each address and we’ll quote for them together. We repair between tenancies, so baths and trays are ready for the next tenant without a refit, and we carry out snagging repairs for builders and developers. Read our guide for landlords.

What happens after you send photos

We look at the photos, check the material and the type of damage, and reply with a fixed price and what it includes. If the photos don’t show enough, we’ll ask for another angle rather than guess. Once you’re happy, we agree a date. On the day, the technician protects the room, carries out the repair and tells you when the bath can be used. There’s no deposit to pay before the visit, and no charge for the quote.

If anything turns out different from the photos, such as rust that has spread further under the enamel than could be seen, we explain it and agree any change with you before carrying on.

Comparing quotes

When you compare companies, check what the guarantee covers and for how long, whether VAT is included, and whether the price is fixed or an estimate. All our repairs come with a one-year guarantee.
