Bath repair in Melling, done in place

Bath repair is our most common job. Chips on the rim, rust around the waste and cracks in acrylic are all repaired in place, normally in a single visit. We regularly repair cast iron enamel, roll-top & freestanding and whirlpool & spa baths, and the jobs we see most are rust by the waste and overflow and deep scratches in acrylic.

You’re covered for a year from the day of the repair. If anything isn’t right, ring us and we will come back.

Signs you need bath repair in Melling

Rust usually starts where water sits, by the plughole, beneath dripping taps or in an unrepaired chip. Water on bare metal causes rust that creeps under the surrounding enamel.

If you can see any of these, send us a picture:

  • Deep scratches in acrylic
  • Snagging damage from a refit
  • Impact holes in acrylic

What your bath is made of matters

Acrylic

Acrylic baths are moulded sheet reinforced underneath. There is no rust, but cracks, holes and scratches happen, and a crack only stays repaired if it’s supported underneath.

Pressed steel

Steel baths and trays have a thin metal body under the enamel. Once a chip exposes it, rust follows quickly, so the metal is treated and sealed before the repair.

What a repair can’t fix

We won’t take on work that won’t last, so these are the limits:

  • Leaking fittings, which need a plumber
  • Acrylic cracks with no access behind them
  • A bath that flexes because its feet or cradle have failed (that needs fixing first)

If in doubt, send pictures and we will say what we think.

Melling: your questions answered

Do I have to be there?

Someone needs to let us in and show us the job. You don’t need to watch us work.

Will the price change on the day?

Your quote covers the damage in the photos. Anything extra is discussed before we begin.

Do you work in Melling?

Yes, we do. We send a technician to Melling for every job, with no extra charge for travel.

Is a cracked acrylic bath repairable?

Most of the time. We reinforce the crack from behind, then fill and refinish the front, so access behind the panel is important.

Something went through my bath. Can it be fixed?

Typically. Photos of the hole and the underside help us check.

What about rust by the waste?

Yes, it’s one of the most common repairs we do. We take it back to sound metal, seal it, fill it and match the colour.

Do you do work for letting agents?

Yes, frequently. We quote for multiple addresses and fit around tenancy changeovers.

Is it OK to have pets in the house?

On the day, the room should be kept clear of pets and children, mainly so nothing gets touched before it has cured.

What happens on the day

Nothing needs to be moved out of the room. Everything we use comes in the van with us, lay protective sheets and start once you’re happy with the plan. It typically takes two to three hours for most chips, and you are welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. We clean the area and remove any loose enamel or rust.
  2. The chip or crack is filled, then sanded level with the bath.
  3. We tint the finish on the day to suit your bath’s shade of white or colour.
  4. We build up the finish and polish it into the surrounding enamel.
  5. The repair is left to cure, and most baths can be used the following day.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area around the damage
  • Have somewhere for us to park nearby if possible
  • Avoid using the area for a few hours before we arrive

Advice

DIY repairs versus a professional job

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, then guarantee it for a year.

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can make a small mark look better. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler often lifts.

For landlords and businesses

Rental properties take more wear, and replacing items every time a tenant leaves is expensive. A repair between tenancies is a cheaper way to keep the property in good order.

Hotels, guest houses and holiday lets need rooms back in use quickly, so we keep visits short and tidy. We’ll fit around changeovers where we can.

Should you replace it?

Think about the hidden costs of a new bath: taking out the old one, plumbing, tiling, a panel and redecorating. A repair is one job, done in one visit. Prices start from £95. A few things move the price: access, material, the extent of the damage and whether we can do several items together. Send pictures and you’ll get a fixed figure.
