What we do, step by step

You don’t need to empty the room. We bring everything we need with us, put protection down and get going once we have agreed what we’re doing. Most jobs take a couple of hours, and you’re welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. We cut out and remove all of the old sealant.
  2. We clean the joint and treat any mould.
  3. The joint is dried thoroughly.
  4. We fill a bath with water before sealing so the gap is at its widest.
  5. We apply new mould-resistant silicone and tool it to a neat finish, including around the taps.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention if the room is upstairs or in a flat
  • Avoid using the area for a few hours before we arrive
  • Let us know about parking or access

Getting a price

There is no need for us to visit first. Photos are enough for us to price nearly every job: send a close-up, a wider shot and your postcode, and we will come back to you with a fixed figure.

Advice

Is resealing worth it?

A reseal is one of the cheapest bathroom jobs there is. Leaving failed sealant can let water cause damage that costs far more to fix. Compared with replacing, repairing typically costs far less, because nothing has to be taken out, refitted or made good. Your fixed quote shows exactly what’s included.

Why choose Surface Doctor in Plummers Plain

How to look after the repair

Good habits make a big difference to how long a repair lasts:

  • Open a window after bathing
  • Keep bottles off the joints
  • Use the extractor fan
  • Reseal at the first sign of lifting

Leave the sealant to cure for the time we give you, normally about a day.

If you notice damp, stains on the ceiling below or loose tiles, act quickly. It may be more than a reseal, and we’ll say if you need a builder or plumber.

What affects the price in Plummers Plain

There’s no charge for travel to Plummers Plain. The price comes down to:

  • The material and finish
  • Access to the area
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • Whether we combine several jobs

We charge the same wherever you are, so there is no premium for Plummers Plain. What changes the price is the job itself: the material, the amount of damage and how many items.

Send photos for a quote

A couple of clear pictures is all it takes. It helps if you send:

  • Where you are, by postcode
  • A picture taken from further back
  • A clear, close picture of the problem area
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale

For a price in Plummers Plain, pictures are the quickest way: one close up, one from further back, plus your postcode. You’ll get a fixed quote with dates to choose from.

Honest limits

Some jobs aren’t right for a repair, for example:

  • Gaps so wide they need filling or trims before sealing
  • A flexing bath
  • Rotten walls or floors behind the bath

Send us pictures and we’ll tell you honestly.

Materials we repair

  • Wet rooms
  • Basins & vanity units
  • Shower trays & enclosures
  • Baths
  • Kitchen worktops & sinks
