Laminate
Chips on edges, scratches and small burns can be filled and colour and pattern-matched. Laminate that has swollen from water getting into the chipboard core can’t be repaired from the top and needs that section replacing.
Solid wood
Scorch marks, water marks and scratches can usually be sanded out and the area refinished and re-oiled. Deep burns may need filling and colour-matching.
Granite, quartz and marble
Chips on edges and around sinks are common and can be filled with a matched resin and polished. Hairline cracks can often be filled. A crack where the worktop has moved may point to a support problem underneath.
Solid surface (such as Corian)
Scratches, chips and burns in solid-surface tops can often be sanded and refinished.
