About bath repair in CM99

We repair enamelled steel, cast iron and acrylic baths. The method changes with the material: metal baths need any rust dealt with first, and acrylic cracks need support from behind. We work on acrylic, roll-top & freestanding and whirlpool & spa baths, and people most often call us about deep scratches in acrylic and chips along the edge of the bath.

We begin by going over the job with you. After that, protection goes down around the work area and the work begins. It normally takes a few hours, and we will keep you posted as we go.

  1. We protect the bath and the floor around it.
  2. The damaged area is cleaned, keyed and degreased.
  3. We fill it, let it set, then sand it flush.
  4. Colour and gloss are matched to the surrounding surface.
  5. We tidy up and tell you when the bath can be used, generally the day after.

What it costs in CM99

Prices start from £95. We charge the same wherever you are, so there is no premium for CM99. What changes the price is the job itself: how much damage, what it’s made of and how many items.

Can I fix it myself?

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

You can buy a DIY kit for most repairs, and they can make a small mark look better. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface is not prepared the repair will not last.

Different materials, different repairs

Cast iron

Cast iron is heavy and rigid, with a fused enamel surface. Chips can rust if left, but the body of the bath lasts a very long time, so it’s always worth repairing.

Acrylic

Acrylic baths are moulded sheet reinforced underneath. There’s no rust, but cracks, holes and scratches happen, and a crack only stays repaired if it’s supported underneath.

Looking after it afterwards

How the surface is treated afterwards matters. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Do not leave a fresh chip for long
  • Store metal items away from the bath
  • Rinse it down after each bath
  • Get a dripping tap fixed promptly

Give the repair the full curing time we recommend before running a bath. From then on, mild cleaning is all it needs.

Rust under enamel spreads surprisingly quickly. Left for months, a small chip can grow into a large rust patch, so early repair keeps the cost down.

Why repair rather than replace?

When the bath is otherwise sound, repairing beats replacing. It costs less, takes less time and causes far less upheaval, and the bathroom stays as it is. If the whole surface is worn, re-enamelling may make more sense, and we’ll tell you.
