Repairing versus replacing in Bentley Heath

A new bath means a plumber, removing a heavy bath, re-tiling or making good the walls and several days without a working bathroom. Re-enamelling gives the bath a new finish without moving it. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. What it costs depends on the type and amount of damage, what it’s made of and how many jobs we combine into one visit. We give a fixed price from your photos, so there are no surprises on the day.

Bath re-enamelling at your home in Bentley Heath

Re-enamelling gives a worn bath a new glossy surface without a refit. It’s the answer when the entire bath is tired rather than one spot. We work on Victorian roll-tops, acrylic baths and basins & shower trays, and common reasons people get in touch are a roll-top that’s seen better days and chips and rust in more than one place.

You are covered for a year from the day of the repair. If anything isn’t right, ring us and we will sort it.

What your bath is made of matters

Acrylic

Acrylic baths can be resurfaced too, using a system that bonds to acrylic. The bath needs to be firm and well supported for the finish to last.

Roll-top and period baths

Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, and the outside can be refinished too.

When we would advise against a repair

We won’t take on work that will not last, so these are the limits:

  • Acrylic that moves when you stand in it
  • Holes rusted through the metal
  • A bath split right through the body

If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think.

Materials we repair

  • Basins & shower trays
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Acrylic baths
  • Cast iron baths

Can I fix it myself?

If you’re set on a kit, follow its instructions closely and work on a clean, dry surface, and do not use it until it has fully cured. If it doesn’t work out, we can still repair it properly.

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

What happens on the day

You don’t need to empty the room beforehand. Everything we use comes in the van with us, lay protective sheets and get going once we’ve agreed what we are doing. Most jobs take most of the day, and you’re welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. We mask and protect the room and ventilate it.
  2. The bath is cleaned, degreased and any chips or rust repaired.
  3. We key the surface and put on a bonding primer.
  4. We spray several coats of new enamel finish.
  5. Once cured, normally by the following day, the bath is ready.

How to prepare

  • Keep children and pets away from the room on the day
  • Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing
  • Have a window or extractor fan available

Keeping it looking good

Most damage we see is avoidable. A few tips:

  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent
  • Respect the curing time we give you
  • A dripping tap should be fixed promptly
  • Wipe the bath dry after use in hard water areas

Dry the bath after use if possible, especially in hard water areas, and rinse off any bath products.

If a previous coating is starting to peel, do not pick at it. Water gets under it and the damage spreads, so it’s better to have it stripped and redone.

What bath re-enamelling costs

Prices start from £350. We charge the same across the UK, including Bentley Heath. The price reflects:

  • Doing more than one item at once
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • What kind of damage it is
  • Where the damage is and how we get to it

Every job is a little different, so each one is priced on its own. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all make a difference, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

Quotes from your pictures

Phone pictures are fine, there’s no need for anything special. Make sure they show:

  • A clear, close picture of the problem area
  • Natural light rather than flash
  • The material, if you know it
  • Any earlier repairs or coatings

Call 0345 017 0787 or use the quote form. With one close-up and one wider picture, we can price the job the same day in most cases.

Work for landlords and builders

For developers and builders, we fix damage before handover. Several plots can be done in one visit to keep costs down.

For anyone letting property in or around Bentley Heath, we’ll quote for several properties at once. Just send pictures for each address and we will come back with a combined price.
