DIY repairs versus a professional job

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Getting it right first time is usually cheaper.

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. The trouble is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler often lifts.

Bath re-enamelling in Holbeck Urban Village, done in place

We re-enamel a lot of period and roll-top baths, which would be difficult and expensive to replace. Doing them in place keeps an original feature. Our repair technicians work on cast iron baths, acrylic baths and basins & shower trays, and common reasons people get in touch are stains that won’t shift and a dull, rough surface that won’t come clean.

A one-year guarantee comes with the work, just as it does everywhere we cover.

Different materials, different repairs

Cast iron

A cast iron bath is heavy enough that most people never want to move it. The enamel is the part that wears or chips, and that’s what we repair.

Acrylic

We resurface acrylic baths as well, using a system that bonds to acrylic. The bath needs to be firm and well supported.

What a repair can’t fix

Honesty matters more than a booking, so here’s what a repair will not do:

  • Plumbing leaks, which need a plumber
  • Acrylic that moves when you stand in it
  • A bath that’s rusted through

If in doubt, send photos and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Surfaces we repair

  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Cast iron baths
  • Acrylic baths
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Pressed steel baths

The process

We begin by going over the job with you. After that, protection goes down around the work area and the work begins. It normally takes most of the day, and we will keep you posted as we go.

  1. We sheet, mask and ventilate the room.
  2. We remove the old silicone and deep clean the bath.
  3. Chips, rust and pitting are repaired.
  4. We key the bath and apply a bonding primer.
  5. Several coats of finish are sprayed on, then it cures until the next day.

How to prepare

  • Have somewhere for us to park nearby if possible
  • Tell us about parking, stairs or access
  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children

How to get a price

No survey visit is needed: we price from pictures. Send them through the quote form, or call 0345 017 0787 if you’d rather talk it through, and you will get a fixed figure back.

Keeping it looking good

So the finish stays in good condition for years:

  • Avoid suction-cup mats
  • Store bottles off the bath
  • Respect the curing time we give you
  • A quick wipe after use keeps limescale away

Stick to mild, non-abrasive cleaners, do not use suction bath mats, and don’t leave bottles or razors standing on the surface.

Rust spots on a worn bath get worse with time and make the job bigger. Resurfacing before they spread keeps it simpler.

Repair or replace: which is better?

A replacement often means several trades over several days. Resurfacing takes one technician and usually a day, with the bath back in use the day after. Our bath re-enamelling starts from £350. There are no surprise extras on the day. What we quote from your pictures is what you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.

  • Enamel that’s lost its shine and feels rough
  • A period or roll-top bath worth keeping
  • Staining under the taps and around the waste

  • What protection goes down before work starts
  • Whether a trained technician does the job
