Bath re-enamelling in Pool Quay

How we handle bath re-enamelling in Pool Quay

We resurface cast iron, steel and acrylic baths, including roll-tops and period baths. Several coats of finish go on over a bonding primer, once the bath has been cleaned, repaired and prepared. If you are dealing with a peeling or bubbling previous coating and thin, worn enamel in places, we can normally put it right, on Victorian roll-tops, cast iron baths and basins & shower trays alike.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. Just call us if there’s a problem and we will come back.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can make a small mark look better. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler often lifts.

If you do try a kit, read the instructions carefully, ensure the area is clean and completely dry, and do not use it until it has fully cured. If it doesn’t work out, we can still repair it properly.

Repair or replace: which is better?

Getting a cast iron bath out is hard work: they’re heavy, frequently need breaking up, and a new one is not cheap. Resurfacing in place avoids that entirely. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. We charge the same wherever you are, with no extra for Pool Quay. The job itself decides the price: the material, the amount of damage and how many items.

Why choose Surface Doctor in Pool Quay

  • Fixed prices from your pictures

Different materials, different repairs

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. The enamel is the part that wears or chips, and that’s the part we put right.

Acrylic

Acrylic baths can be resurfaced too, using a system that bonds to acrylic. The bath needs to be firm and well supported for the finish to last.

Prices and what affects them

Prices start from £350. We do not charge extra for travel to Pool Quay. The price comes down to:

  • Any earlier repairs that need removing first
  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • How much damage there is
  • Whether we combine several jobs

Set against the cost of replacement, a repair is generally a fraction of the price, because there is no removal, plumbing or making good. The quote lists exactly what you are paying for.

Send pictures for a quote

Photographing the damage takes a minute. Try to send:

  • Your postcode, so we can check dates
  • A photo taken from further back
  • Natural light rather than flash
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale

There’s no need for us to visit first. Nearly every job can be priced from photos: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we’ll come back to you with a fixed figure.

For landlords and businesses

Builders, developers and site managers book us for snagging repairs, fixing chips and scratches before handover so nothing needs replacing. We’re CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited.

We carry out planned and one-off repairs for housing associations and facilities teams in Powys and across the UK. Repairing in place avoids the disruption of a replacement, which is easier on the people living there.

Common problems we fix in Pool Quay

Enamel’s shine is only skin deep, and every scrub with an abrasive cleaner takes a little away. After years of use, the surface becomes porous and stains easily.

It’s worth getting a quote if you see:

  • A bath that stays dull however much you clean it
  • Worn patches where water runs and sits
  • A coloured bath you want in white
  • An old resurfacing that is failing

What to look for in a quote

  • What aftercare is recommended
  • What happens if they find more damage
  • How soon you can use it again
  • Whether a trained technician does the job

Our hiring checklist

What we do, step by step

On the day, we arrive at the time we’ve agreed, cover the area with dust sheets and masking, and set to work. Expect it to take most of the day. We clean up when we are done and tell you when it’s ready to use.

  1. We sheet, mask and ventilate the room.
  2. Old sealant is cut out and the bath is deep cleaned.
  3. We repair chips, rust spots and pitting.
  4. We key the bath and apply a bonding primer.
  5. The new finish is sprayed on in several coats and left to cure.

How to prepare

  • Keep children and pets away from the room on the day
  • Let us know which floor the room is on
  • Keep a parking space free if you can

When can you do it?

We’ll give you dates with your quote. If it’s urgent, say so and we will do what we can.

Is the work guaranteed?

All our work carries our one-year guarantee. Ask us what it covers when you get your quote.

Will there be a smell?

A little, depending on the job. Open windows and an extractor fan help.

Can you do the outside of a roll-top?

Yes. We can do the inside and outside if you’d like.

Do you need to take the bath out?

No, it stays where it is. We work on the bath in place, with the room masked and ventilated.

Do you cover Pool Quay?

Yes. We work across the UK and travel to Pool Quay and the rest of Powys. Send pictures and we’ll quote, or call 0345 017 0787.

Can you do more than one item on the same visit?

Yes. Combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down. Send photos of everything you’d like done.

When we would advise against a repair

A repair isn’t always the answer, and we’ll tell you before we start. We cannot fix:

  • Anything hidden under an old coating, until we remove it
  • A poorly supported acrylic bath, until it’s firmed up
  • A bath that is rusted through

Not sure? Send photos and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.
