How we handle bath re-enamelling in Thurston

Many of the baths we re-enamel are period roll-tops, which are heavy, hard to move and costly to replace. Resurfacing them in place keeps the original bath. We regularly repair cast iron baths, acrylic baths and Victorian roll-tops, and people most often call us about enamel that’s lost its shine and feels rough and a period or roll-top bath worth keeping.

All our work comes with our one-year guarantee.

Common questions in Thurston

Is there a call-out fee?

Travel is included in the price, and we charge the same wherever you are.

Does someone need to be in?

Someone needs to let us in and show us the job. After that, you can carry on with your day.

How durable is a resurfaced bath?

That depends on preparation and how the bath is treated. With good preparation and gentle cleaning it lasts a long time, and it’s guaranteed for a year.

Do the materials smell?

It depends on the job, but often a little. Ventilation keeps it to a minimum.

How much does bath re-enamelling cost in Thurston?

Resurfacing from £350. The exact price depends on the damage, so we quote from photos. You’ll get a fixed figure before you book.

What do you need from me?

Photos of the damage, a photo of the whole bath and your postcode. After that, we just agree a date.

Someone resurfaced my bath and it’s peeling. Can you help?

Yes, we do this regularly. Removing the old finish takes extra time, which we include in the price.

When can you do it?

It depends on the time of year and where you are. We’ll offer you dates when we send your quote.

Repairs by material

Acrylic

Acrylic feels warm and is light, but it needs firm support underneath. Cracks are strengthened from behind before the front is finished.

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are the classic candidate for re-enamelling. They’re built to last, and only the surface wears, so resurfacing gives them a new life.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

A DIY attempt isn’t a disaster. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it will not stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.

If you are set on a kit, follow its instructions closely, ensure the area is clean and completely dry, and do not use it until it has fully cured. If it fails, we can still put it right.

What a repair can’t fix

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • Leaks from fittings rather than the bath
  • Anything hidden under an old coating, until we remove it
  • A cast iron or steel bath that is cracked right through

Not sure? Send photos and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Repairing versus replacing in Thurston

Replacing the bath means a plumber, removing a heavy bath, making good the walls and tiles and days without a bathroom. Re-enamelling renews the entire surface with the bath left where it is. Prices start from £350. Every job is a little different, so each one is priced on its own. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

What you get with us

  • Honest advice, even when it means no job
  • Dust sheets down, tidy finish
  • CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited
  • One visit for most repairs

Aftercare tips

How the surface is treated afterwards matters. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Don’t let dyes or oils sit on the finish
  • Leave the bath for the full curing time before using it
  • Store bottles off the bath
  • Never use suction bath mats

Rinse away dyes, oils and bath bombs straight after use, as they can stain. Repair dripping taps promptly.

Rust spots on a worn bath get worse with time, and each one adds to the preparation. It’s simpler to resurface before they spread.

Common problems we fix in Thurston

Enamel’s shine is only skin deep, and every scrub with an abrasive cleaner takes a little away. Eventually the surface turns porous and stains.

These are the problems we are asked about most:

  • An outdated colour you’d like to change
  • Lots of chips and rust spots
  • A period or roll-top bath worth keeping
  • Thin, worn enamel in places

Questions to ask before you book

  • What the guarantee covers, and for how long
  • Is the price fixed, and does it include VAT?
  • What prep work is covered
  • Whether they match the colour on site

Choosing a repair company

What happens on the day

Arrival times are agreed in advance, so you know when to expect us. On site, it takes a full day for most jobs. We leave the room clean and you’ll know when it can be used.

  1. The room is masked, protected and ventilated.
  2. Next we degrease the bath and fix chips and rust spots.
  3. The surface is prepared and a bonding primer applied.
  4. We spray several coats of new enamel finish.
  5. We leave it to cure, and it’s normally ready the following day.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Make sure the area is dry
  • Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing
  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area

What affects the price in Thurston

Resurfacing from £350. Prices are worked out job by job. What matters most is:

  • Unusual colours or finishes
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • Doing more than one item at once
  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear

A repair is priced on what needs doing, not where you live. The full price is agreed before you book, with no extras added later.

Send pictures for a quote

A couple of clear pictures is all it takes. It helps if you send:

  • Natural light rather than flash
  • Where you are, by postcode
  • Any details about the material
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale

Upload a picture of the damage and one of the entire item, with your IP31 postcode, and we’ll reply with a fixed price.
