How we handle bath repair in Blackdog

Most bath damage, from chips and cracks to rust spots and holes, is repaired in place. There is no plumbing to disconnect, the tiles are not touched, and the finish is matched to the rest of the bath. If you’re dealing with damage done while the bathroom was being fitted and a kit repair that didn’t last, we can usually put it right, on cast iron enamel, roll-top & freestanding and whirlpool & spa baths alike.

Every repair is covered by a one-year guarantee.

Before and after: a damaged acrylic bath corner repaired in place

Different materials, different repairs

Pressed steel

Pressed steel is thinner and lighter, with an enamel finish like cast iron. Chips rust quickly on steel, particularly by the plughole, so repair chips early.

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are thick and very strong, finished with fired enamel. Chips can rust if left, but the bath itself lasts for generations, which makes it well worth repairing.

Prices and what affects them

Prices start from £95. You won’t pay by the hour. The price depends on:

  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • How many areas need work
  • Doing more than one item at once

A repair is priced on what needs doing, not your postcode. The full price is agreed before you book, with nothing added on the day.

Getting a price from photos

Photographing the damage takes a minute. Try to send:

  • What it’s made of, if you know
  • One sharp close-up of the damage
  • Details of any past repairs
  • A photo taken from further back

The quickest way to a price is to send two or three pictures through our quote form or call us. We’ll say immediately whether it can be repaired.

DIY kit or professional repair?

If you’re set on a kit, follow its instructions closely and work on a clean, dry surface, and do not use it until it has fully cured. If it doesn’t work out, we can still repair it properly.

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

How it works

Here’s how a visit generally runs: we arrive at the agreed slot, sheet and mask the area around the job, carry out the work and tidy away. Plan for a morning or an afternoon from start to finish. Before we go, we’ll explain how long to leave it and what to avoid for the first few days.

  1. Dust sheets and masking go down around the bath.
  2. We clean, key and degrease the damage.
  3. Filler goes in and is sanded flush once it has set.
  4. We match both the colour and the shine.
  5. We tidy up and tell you when the bath can be used, normally the following day.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Point us to the nearest place to park
  • Ensure the room can be ventilated
  • Let the surface dry out before the visit

Advice

Why repair rather than replace?

A repair makes sense whenever the damage is localised. It’s a fraction of the cost of a new bath and fitting, it takes one visit, and nothing else in the room changes. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. No two jobs are quite the same, so each one is priced on its own. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down.

What you get with us

  • Honest advice, even when it means no job
  • Colour mixed on the day to match
  • Accredited with CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor
  • No extra charge for your area

Blackdog questions

Can tenants book a repair?

Yes, but check with your landlord or agent first. Landlords are often glad to have it sorted before the end of a tenancy.

What do you need from me?

A close-up, a wider photo and your postcode. Then we will agree a date.

Do you cover the whole of Aberdeen?

We work UK-wide. Prices do not change with location.

Do you do work for letting agents?

Yes. We carry out repairs for householders, landlords, letting agents, builders and businesses across Aberdeen.

Do I need to be at home?

Yes. The technician needs access to the room for the visit, at a time that suits you.

Is it safe with children and pets around?

Please keep children and pets out of the room during the visit. Everywhere else in the home is fine.

Can you redo an old repair?

Yes. We remove the old filler and start again. Tell us about it when you send photos.

Can you repair a hole in a bath?

Frequently, if there’s access underneath. We back the hole, fill it and refinish the surface.

For landlords and businesses

Builders, developers and site managers book us for snagging repairs, putting right damage done during fitting. We are CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited.

Hospitality businesses need rooms back in use quickly, so most of our work is done in a single visit. We can work around your bookings.

When to call us in Blackdog

A cracked acrylic bath generally wasn’t supported properly. Legs that are not adjusted, a missing cradle or a soft floor let the base flex until it cracks.

The most common problems we’re called about are:

  • Snagging damage from a refit
  • Rust spots around the plughole
  • A hole punched through by something heavy
  • Chips along the edge of the bath

Comparing quotes

  • Whether a trained technician does the job
  • What preparation is included
  • Whether the colour is mixed to match
  • Whether the price is fixed and includes VAT

Choosing a repair company

When a repair is not the answer

We will not take on work that will not last, so here’s what a repair cannot put right:

  • A steel bath rusted through
  • Acrylic cracks with no access behind them
  • Wear across the entire surface, which needs re-enamelling

If in doubt, send photos and we will say what we think.
