DIY repairs versus a professional job

What a professional repair adds is preparation, colour matching and finishing. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, then guarantee it for a year.

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For anything you look at every day, anything that has rusted, cracked or holed, or anything on a coloured surface, a professional repair is worth it.

Bath repair at your home in Methil

A typical bath repair is a few hours’ work, and you can normally bathe again the following day. You won’t need a plumber or tiler, because the bath doesn’t move. Common call-outs are for a chip where the taps sit and snagging damage from a refit, in roll-top & freestanding, cast iron enamel and whirlpool & spa baths.

You are covered for a year from the day of the repair. Just call us if there’s a problem and we’ll come back.

Different materials, different repairs

Acrylic

An acrylic bath is a moulded sheet strengthened from below. They do not rust, but they can crack, scratch or be holed, and a crack only stays repaired if it’s supported underneath.

Pressed steel

Steel baths are lighter than cast iron, but have a similar enamel surface. Exposed steel rusts fast, especially around the waste, so early repairs matter.

Work for landlords and builders

Hotels, guest houses and holiday lets cannot afford rooms out of action for long, so most of our work is done in a single visit. We can work around your bookings.

For developers and builders, we fix damage before handover, so there’s no need to replace a damaged item at the last minute. We can visit several plots in one trip to keep costs down.

What happens on the day

You don’t need to empty the room beforehand. Everything we use comes in the van with us, lay protective sheets and get going once we’ve agreed what we’re doing. It normally takes a few hours, and you can get on with other things while we are there.

  1. First, we check the damage against your photos and agree the plan.
  2. Loose enamel, rust and dirt are removed so the repair can bond.
  3. The damage is filled in layers and shaped to the curve of the bath.
  4. The colour is tinted by hand until it matches.
  5. The repair is polished to the same gloss as the bath and left to cure.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Keep children and pets away from the room on the day
  • Tell us about any previous repairs or coatings
  • Clear toiletries, mats and anything else from around the area

How we price bath repair

Repairs from £95. Each job gets its own fixed quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • How much damage there is
  • Whether we combine several jobs
  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • Unusual colours or finishes

A repair generally costs much less than people expect, especially compared with replacing and refitting. Send photos and we’ll give you the exact figure.

Getting a price from photos

You can take the pictures on your phone, there is no need for anything special. Ensure they show:

  • Daylight if possible, and no flash reflection
  • Any earlier repairs or coatings
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale
  • One picture of the whole bath

Getting a quote takes a couple of minutes: take one close-up and one wider shot of the bath, add your postcode and send them to us. You’ll get a fixed quote, not an estimate.

Looking after it afterwards

Nothing complicated is needed, just a few sensible habits:

  • Have new chips seen to early
  • Clean with warm water and a mild detergent
  • Rinse the bath after use, especially in hard water areas
  • Put a towel in the bath if you are working above it

Do not leave razors, cans or hair grips in the bath, because they can mark the enamel. A dripping tap should be fixed early, too.

Until we visit, a strip of waterproof tape over the damage helps, so water cannot get in. Take it off before we arrive.

Honest limits

A repair is not right for every job, for example:

  • Cracks in acrylic we cannot reach from underneath
  • Flexing caused by a failed cradle or loose feet
  • Leaks from the waste or overflow fittings (a plumber’s job)

If in doubt, send photos and we will say what we think before booking.

Materials we repair

  • Roll-top & freestanding
  • Whirlpool & spa baths
  • Acrylic
  • Pressed steel enamel
  • Cast iron enamel

Repair or replace: which is better?

Cast iron baths in particular are worth repairing: they’re very heavy to remove, especially upstairs, and replacing like for like isn’t cheap. Repairing it leaves it where it is. Our bath repair starts from £95. A few things move the price: access, material, the extent of the damage and whether we can do several items together. Send photos and you will get a fixed figure.
