How we handle bath repair in Twydall

We repair just the damaged spot and colour-match it to the bath, which is far cheaper than replacing a fitted bath and the tiles around it. Most baths can be used again the next day. We’re frequently asked to fix scuffs and scratches in the surface and a failed DIY repair that’s discoloured or lifting, across cast iron enamel, pressed steel enamel and whirlpool & spa baths.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If there’s a problem with the repair within the year, we return and sort it.

Repair or replace: which is better?

Cast iron baths in particular are worth repairing: getting one out, particularly from an upstairs bathroom, is a big job, and replacing like for like is not cheap. Repairing it leaves it where it is. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. A few things move the price: access, material, the extent of the damage and whether we can do several items together. Photos let us give you a fixed figure.

Repairs by material

Acrylic

Acrylic feels warm and is light, but it needs firm support underneath. Cracks are strengthened from behind before the front is finished.

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. The enamel is the part that wears or chips, and that’s the part we put right.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it will not stop us repairing it. Just mention it when you send photos, as it can add time.

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Getting it right first time is normally cheaper.

What we do, step by step

It’s a tidy, low-fuss visit. We agree the arrival time in advance, cover and mask the work area, and get on with the job, which normally takes a few hours. If we find something your pictures didn’t show, we’ll explain it before carrying on.

  1. Dust sheets and masking go down around the bath.
  2. The damaged area is cleaned, keyed and degreased, and any rust is treated.
  3. We fill it, let it set, then sand it flush.
  4. Colour and gloss are matched to the surrounding surface.
  5. We clear up and give you the curing time, normally until the day after.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing
  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Ensure the room can be ventilated

Ask for a price

No survey visit is needed: we price from photos. Use the quote form, or ring 0345 017 0787 to talk it through, and you’ll get a fixed figure back.

Questions from Twydall

What does bath repair cost?

Repairs from £95. The exact price depends on the damage, so we quote from pictures. You know the full cost before anything is booked.

Can tenants book a repair?

Yes, though it’s best to check with your landlord first. Many landlords are happy for a repair to be arranged.

Is a bath repair permanent?

A properly prepared repair should last a long time, and ours come with a one-year guarantee. Gentle cleaning helps it last.

Is there a guarantee?

Every repair comes with our one-year guarantee. Ask us what it covers when you get your quote.

Do you do work for letting agents?

Yes. We work for landlords, agents, builders and businesses as well as householders.

What about rust by the waste?

Yes. We take out the rust and any loose enamel, fill the area, then colour-match the finish.

Can you repair a crack in an acrylic bath?

In most cases. The back of the crack is strengthened before the front is filled and refinished, so access behind the panel is important.

Something went through my bath. Can it be fixed?

In most cases. Send us a photo of the hole and one from under the bath if you can.

Prices and what affects them

Prices start from £95. Every quote is fixed and free. What we look at:

  • How many items we do on one visit
  • The material
  • The type of damage
  • How many areas need work

We don’t add extras on the day. The price we quote from your photos is the price you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.

Quotes from your photos

Almost every job we do is priced from pictures. This is what we need:

  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare
  • What it’s made of, if you know
  • A photo taken from further back
  • A clear, close picture of the problem area

Upload photos of the damage and one of the whole item, with your ME8 postcode, and we will come back with a fixed quote.

Work for landlords and builders

Rental properties take more wear, and replacing items every time a tenant leaves is expensive. A repair between tenancies is a cheaper way to keep the property in good order.

Builders use us to fix snagging damage before handover, so there’s no need to replace a damaged item at the last minute. Several plots can be done in one visit to keep costs down.

Aftercare tips

So the finish stays in good condition:

  • Check that an acrylic bath does not move when you stand in it
  • Don’t leave razors or cans standing in the bath
  • Use a soft cloth and washing-up liquid for everyday cleaning
  • Put a towel in the bath if you’re working above it

Use gentle, non-abrasive cleaners and avoid dropping heavy items on the repaired area. Deal with new chips early, before rust sets in.

Do not leave a chip on a steel or cast iron bath. Once water reaches the metal, rust begins, turning a quick repair into a bigger one.
