How we handle bath resealing in Marston

A good reseal is all about preparation: every bit of old silicone out, mould treated, the joint clean and dry. Only then does the new sealant go on, as one neat, continuous bead. If you’re dealing with an untidy old seal and black spots in the silicone, we can help, whatever the material.

We guarantee the work for a year. If something isn’t right in that time, we come back and put it right.

Is resealing worth it?

Resealing is routine maintenance. Leaving split or mouldy sealant can let water reach the walls and floor, which costs far more to put right. Most people are surprised how affordable a repair is, especially compared with replacing and refitting. Photos let us give you the exact figure.

10 questions to ask before booking

What happens on the day

You don’t need to empty the room beforehand. Everything we use comes in the van with us, lay protective sheets and get going once we have agreed what we are doing. It typically takes about two hours for a bath, and you’re welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. First we strip out every bit of the old mastic.
  2. The joint is cleaned and any mould treated.
  3. We dry the joint thoroughly.
  4. For a bath, we fill it with water first so the joint is at its widest.
  5. We apply new mould-resistant silicone and tool it to a neat finish, including around the taps.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have a window or extractor fan available
  • Tell us if there are stairs or a lift
  • Make sure the area is dry

Advice

When we would advise against a repair

In fairness, there are a few things a repair won’t fix:

  • Hollow or loose tiles
  • A flexing bath
  • Gaps so wide they need filling or trims before sealing

Not sure? Send pictures and we’ll give you a straight answer.

  • Baths
  • Wet rooms
  • Kitchen worktops & sinks
  • Basins & vanity units
  • Shower trays & enclosures

Work for landlords and builders

We also carry out snagging repairs for builders and developers, putting right damage done during fitting. We’re CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited.

If you manage property in Marston, we can repair and quote for several addresses together. Just send pictures for each address and we’ll price them together.

What your bath or shower is made of matters

Baths

Baths are resealed with water in them, to open the joint fully.

Shower trays

We put weight on a tray before sealing it, for the same reason.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

If you’re set on a kit, follow its instructions closely, and give it the full curing time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still repair it properly.

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For damage in plain view, cracks, holes or rust, or coloured finishes, it’s worth having it done properly.

How to care for the repair

A little care keeps the finish looking good. We recommend:

  • Give the seal a regular clean
  • Keep the joints dry
  • Ventilate the bathroom well
  • Do not stand toiletries on the seal

Don’t scrape the sealant with anything sharp, and do not stand bottles on the seal.

Damp below or loose tiles need checking quickly. It may be more than a reseal, and we will say if you need a builder or plumber.
