The process

You do not need to empty the room beforehand. Everything we use comes in the van with us, lay protective sheets and start once you are happy with the plan. Most jobs take about two hours for a bath, and you are welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. We cut out and remove all of the old sealant.
  2. We clean the joint and treat any mould.
  3. We make sure the joint is completely dry.
  4. Baths are filled with water first, so the joint is at its widest.
  5. We run a new bead of mould-resistant silicone and smooth it neatly, including around the taps.

Advice

When we’d advise against a repair

We’d rather lose a job than do one that will not last, so here’s what a repair can’t put right:

  • A flexing bath
  • Hollow or loose tiles
  • Rotten walls or floors behind the bath

Not sure? Send pictures and we will give you a straight answer.

Materials we work on in Rake

  • Wet rooms
  • Kitchen worktops & sinks
  • Basins & vanity units
  • Shower trays & enclosures
  • Baths

Aftercare tips

It’s all simple stuff, just a few sensible habits:

  • Ventilate the bathroom well
  • Let steam out after showers
  • Store bottles on a shelf
  • Clean the joints with a mild cleaner

Good ventilation is the best protection, and wipe the joints after use to keep mould away.

Mouldy sealant is more than a cosmetic problem, it’s a sign moisture is sitting in the joint. An early reseal keeps water where it belongs.

FAQs for Rake

Can pets and children be at home?

Keep pets and children away from the work area on the day, so the repair isn’t disturbed while it cures.

Do you do work for letting agents?

We do, regularly. We can quote for several properties together and work between tenancies.

Can you repair something that’s been repaired before?

Typically, yes. We remove the old repair before doing a new one.

Can you repair several things at once?

Of course, and it usually saves money. Just add the extra items to your photos and you will get one combined price.

Do you hold any accreditations?

We hold CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile accreditations.

How do I stop mould in sealant?

Mostly moisture and poor ventilation. Mould-resistant silicone and good ventilation help.

Do you seal over the old sealant?

All the old sealant comes out. New silicone won’t bond to old.

Is my repair covered?

All our work carries our one-year guarantee. We’ll explain what it covers when we quote.

What your bath or shower is made of matters

Shower trays

We put weight on a tray before sealing it, for the same reason.

Baths

Baths are resealed with water in them, so the joint is at its widest.

Work for landlords and builders

We work for landlords, letting agents and housing providers in Rake as well as homeowners. Repairing between tenancies keeps void periods short, and it typically costs far less than a refit.

We regularly price jobs from inventory or check-out pictures. You can have a price before you arrange access, and we can arrange access with the tenant directly if that helps.

DIY kit or professional repair?

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Getting it right first time is generally cheaper.

A DIY attempt isn’t a disaster. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it will not stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send pictures.

When to call us in Rake

Most reseals are because of black mould. It grows into the sealant itself, so cleaning cannot get it all out.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Gaps in the seal
  • Old sealant that looks dirty
  • An untidy old seal
  • Unsealed corners

What to look for in a quote

  • What preparation is included
  • Whether the colour is mixed to match
  • Who turns up on the day
  • What happens if the damage is worse than the pictures show

How to compare quotes

Why it’s worth resealing in Rake

Resealing is a small job. Putting off a reseal can let water reach the walls and floor, and that damage costs much more to fix. No two jobs are quite the same, so we price each one individually. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all make a difference, and combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down.
