Bath resealing in Rode

How we handle bath resealing in Rode

The key to a good reseal is getting all of the old silicone out. Fresh sealant does not stick to old, which is why so many DIY reseals peel. If you are dealing with sealant that’s split or lifting and black spots in the silicone, we can usually put it right, whatever the material.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything is not right, ring us and we’ll sort it.

When we’d advise against a repair

We will not take on work that won’t last, so these are the limits:

  • Hollow or loose tiles
  • A flexing bath
  • Water damage behind the bath that needs a builder

If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think.

Surfaces we repair

  • Shower trays & enclosures
  • Baths
  • Kitchen worktops & sinks
  • Basins & vanity units
  • Wet rooms

How the visit works

Here’s how a visit typically runs: we arrive on time, sheet and mask the area around the job, carry out the work and tidy away. Allow about two hours for a bath. Before leaving, we tell you when it can be used and what to avoid for the first few days.

  1. All the old sealant is cut out and removed.
  2. Next we clean the joint and deal with mould.
  3. We make sure the joint is completely dry.
  4. Baths are filled with water first, so the joint is at its widest.
  5. We run a new bead of mould-resistant silicone and smooth it neatly, including around the taps.

How to prepare

  • Have a window or extractor fan available
  • Keep children and pets away from the room on the day
  • Ensure the area is dry

Advice

Repairs by material

Shower trays

Trays are sealed with weight on them, for the same reason.

Sinks and worktops

Basins, vanity units and kitchen worktops are resealed too, once the joint is completely dry.

What affects the price in Rode

We charge the same across the UK, including Rode. What changes the price is:

  • Doing more than one item at once
  • How easy the damage is to reach
  • The material
  • Whether old repairs or coatings need taking off

The price reflects the work involved, not your postcode. The full price is agreed before you book, with no extras added later.

Getting a price from pictures

A couple of clear pictures is all it takes. Try to include:

  • What it’s made of, if you know
  • Whether it’s been repaired or coated before
  • Where you are, by postcode
  • Natural light rather than flash

Upload pictures of the damage and a wider shot of the entire item, and tell us you’re in Rode, and we’ll reply with a fixed price.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The risk is that a kit repair hides the damage for a while, then fails, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We prepare the area properly, mix the colour on site and polish the finish to match, then guarantee it for a year.

Your questions about bath resealing in Rode

When can I use the bath after resealing?

Usually after around 24 hours. We’ll tell you the exact time.

Can new silicone go over old?

We always remove the old sealant completely. New silicone won’t bond to old.

Can pets and children be at home?

Please keep children and pets out of the room during the visit and until it has cured. Everywhere else in the home is fine.

Can you do more than one item on the same visit?

Of course, and it typically saves money. Send pictures of everything together and you will get one combined price.

Why does my sealant keep going mouldy?

Typically poor ventilation and moisture sitting on the joint. We use mould-resistant silicone, and ventilation helps it last.

What does bath resealing cost?

Because every job differs, we price from pictures. You’ll get a fixed figure before you book.

What information do you need?

Send pictures through the quote form or call 0345 017 0787.

How long does a reseal take?

Generally a couple of hours, then it needs to cure.

What we’re called out for in Rode

For landlords and businesses

Hotels, guest houses and holiday lets cannot afford rooms out of action for long, so most of our work is done in a single visit. We can work around your bookings.

Builders use us to fix snagging damage before handover, saving last-minute replacements. Several plots can be done in one visit.

How to care for the repair

Simple care helps the repair last. We recommend:

  • Don’t stand toiletries on the seal
  • Reseal at the first sign of lifting
  • Give the seal a regular clean
  • Let steam out after showers

Good ventilation is the best protection, and dry the joints after bathing to keep mould away.

Reseal before water gets in. Gaps or lifting edges mean it needs doing.
