DIY repairs versus a professional job

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Doing it properly first is generally the cheaper route.

A DIY attempt isn’t a disaster. We remove the old filler and start again, so it does not stop a professional repair. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send pictures.

Why reseal now?

A professional reseal costs little compared with water damage. It’s a quick job that protects your walls and floors. Compared with replacing, repairing typically costs far less, because there’s no removal, plumbing or making good. Your fixed quote shows exactly what’s included.

Why us?

  • Free fixed quotes from pictures
  • CHAS and Constructionline accredited
  • A year’s guarantee on all work

When we would advise against a repair

To be straight with you, there are a few things a repair will not fix:

  • Rotten walls or floors behind the bath
  • Very wide gaps that need a trim
  • Loose tiles, which need refixing first

Not sure? Send pictures and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

Materials we repair

Questions from The Murray

Are there extra charges for The Murray?

Travel is included in the price, with the same prices everywhere we work.

When can you do it?

Your quote comes with available dates. If it’s urgent, say so and we will do what we can.

What happens next?

We look at the photos and reply with a fixed quote and some dates. If anything’s unclear, we will ask for another photo.

What information do you need?

A close-up, a wider photo and your postcode. After that, we just agree a date.

What happens if you find more damage?

We’ll show you and explain before doing anything extra. Nothing extra is done without your say-so.

Will you leave a mess?

We protect the room with dust sheets and masking first, and we clean up when we’ve finished.

Do you work in The Murray?

Yes. We work across the UK and come to The Murray and the rest of South Lanarkshire. Send us photos for a fixed quote, or call 0345 017 0787.

Why does my sealant keep splitting?

Usually because the bath or tray moves, or it was sealed with the bath empty. We seal baths full of water.

How it works

Here’s how a visit generally runs: we arrive at the agreed slot, protect everything around the work area, carry out the work and tidy away. Plan for a couple of hours from start to finish. Before leaving, we tell you when it can be used and what to avoid for the first few days.

  1. We cut out and remove all of the old sealant.
  2. We clean the joint and treat any mould.
  3. We make sure the joint is completely dry.
  4. Baths are filled with water first, so the joint is at its widest.
  5. New mould-resistant silicone goes on and is tooled to a neat finish, including around the taps.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let the surface dry out before the visit
  • Keep pets and children out of the room while we work
  • Let us know which floor the room is on

Get a quote

You do not need a survey visit. Nearly every job can be priced from photos: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we will reply with a fixed quote.

Keeping it looking good

Most damage we see is avoidable. A few tips:

  • Clean the joints with a mild cleaner
  • Ventilate the bathroom well
  • Open a window after bathing
  • Reseal when black spots won’t clean off

Run the extractor fan, wipe the joints dry after use, and give them a regular clean with a mild cleaner to slow mould growth.

Black mould in sealant isn’t just unsightly, it’s a sign moisture is sitting in the joint. Resealing early keeps water out of the walls and floor.

Repairs by material

Sinks and worktops

Basins, vanity units and kitchen worktops are resealed too, with the joint fully dried first.

Baths

Baths are resealed with water in them, to open the joint fully.
