DIY repairs versus a professional job

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but the repairs we redo most often are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Doing it properly first is normally the cheaper route.

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For damage in plain view, cracks, holes or rust, or coloured finishes, it’s worth having it done properly.

Bath resealing in Wyndbrook without replacing anything

Baths, trays, basins and kitchen worktops all get resealed using mould-resistant silicone. A typical reseal takes a couple of hours, then it needs to cure. Our technicians work on shower trays & enclosures, baths and basins & vanity units, and people most often call us about a messy previous reseal and old sealant that looks dirty.

Every repair comes with a one-year guarantee.

The process

You do not need to empty the room beforehand. We bring everything we need with us, lay protective sheets and start once you are happy with the plan. It usually takes around two hours, and you are welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. We protect the area and mask the joint lines.
  2. Old sealant and residue are removed.
  3. We clean, treat and dry the joint.
  4. We run a continuous bead of new silicone.
  5. The bead is smoothed, the tape removed and the seal left to cure.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know which floor the room is on
  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Let us know about parking or access

Prices and what affects them

There’s no area surcharge for Wyndbrook. What changes the price is:

  • The material
  • How easy the damage is to reach
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • How many items we do on one visit

Instead of hourly rates, we fix the price before we start. It depends on the damage, the material and access, and combining items on one visit brings it down.

How to get a fixed quote

The better the photos, the more accurate the price. Here’s what we find most useful:

  • One picture of the whole bath or shower
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale
  • The material, if you know it
  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare

Send us a picture of the damage and a wider shot of the entire item, with your GL19 postcode, and we will come back with a fixed quote.

Why it’s worth resealing in Wyndbrook

Sealing over old silicone is a false economy. It soon peels, and traps mould underneath. We remove the old sealant completely. A repair generally costs much less than people expect, especially compared with replacing and refitting. Send pictures and we’ll give you the exact figure.

Questions from Wyndbrook

Is there a call-out fee?

We do not add a call-out fee. Your fixed quote includes everything.

Can you repair something that’s been repaired before?

Typically, yes. We remove the old repair before doing a new one.

How long does resealing take?

A bath or shower typically takes a couple of hours. It then needs time to cure.

Will you leave a mess?

No. The work area is masked and covered, and we leave the room clean.

Do you come to Wyndbrook?

We do. Technicians travel to Wyndbrook from across the region, with no extra charge for travel.

Do I need to be at home?

Yes. The technician needs access to the room for the visit, at a time we agree with you.

Will there be a smell?

Expect a mild smell while we’re working, which fades afterwards.

Why does my sealant keep going mouldy?

Mould needs moisture. Ventilation and drying keep it clean longer.

Keeping it looking good

Nothing complicated is needed:

  • Air the room after use
  • Keep the joints dry
  • Reseal at the first sign of lifting
  • Do not stand toiletries on the seal

Avoid scraping the joints, and do not stand bottles on the seal.

Reseal before water gets in. Split or lifting sealant is a sign it’s time.

When to call us in Wyndbrook

Even good sealant eventually discolours, especially in a busy family bathroom. Steam, soap and movement all take their toll.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Black spots in the silicone
  • Silicone coming away from the tiles
  • Stained silicone
  • Leaks at the edges
