How to make a slippery bath safer

Options that add grip without relying on a bath mat.

Why baths are slippery

Baths and trays are made smooth so they’re easy to clean. With soap and water on the surface, that smoothness becomes a slip risk, especially for older people and children.

The trouble with bath mats

Mats help, but they trap water and grow mould underneath, need taking out and cleaning, and their suckers can damage resurfaced baths. They’re also easy to forget.

Non-slip coatings

A clear textured coating applied to the standing area gives permanent grip and stays put. It’s easy to clean with a soft brush. See non-slip bath and shower coating.

Other simple steps

  • Fit a grab rail by the bath or in the shower.
  • Keep a non-slip mat on the floor outside the bath.
  • Rinse away soap after use.
  • Consider a bath step or seat for anyone with limited mobility.
