Can I fix it myself?

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs often look fine at first and then fail, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that is fine. We remove the old filler and start again, so it won’t stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send pictures.

About our non-slip bath coating in Barnacle

It’s a clear, textured coating, so it shows only as a slightly matt area where you stand. It suits older people, families and holiday lets. We regularly repair wet room floors (ask us), acrylic baths and enamelled baths, and people most frequently call us about safety for older or less mobile people and bath mats that harbour mould or get forgotten.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything isn’t right, ring us and we’ll sort it. A soft brush and mild cleaner keep it clean. Avoid scourers on the coating.

How it works

You do not need to empty the room. We bring everything we need with us, lay protective sheets and start once you are happy with the plan. It usually takes a morning or an afternoon, and you’re welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. We start by degreasing the area where you stand.
  2. We mask out the area to be treated.
  3. The clear textured coating is applied.
  4. The masking comes off to leave a neat edge.
  5. We leave it to cure, normally overnight.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area around the damage
  • Open a window if you can
  • Tell us if there are stairs or a lift

Advice

Should you replace it?

The alternatives are replacing the bath or tray with a textured one, or a bath mat that needs lifting and cleaning. A non-slip coating treats your existing bath or tray. We charge the same wherever you are, so there is no premium for Barnacle. The job itself decides the price: how much damage, what it’s made of and how many items.

Why us?

  • One visit for most repairs
  • Honest advice, even when it means no job
  • No extra charge for your area
  • No need to remove anything

Common problems we fix in Barnacle

Baths and trays are made smooth so they’re easy to clean, yet wet, soapy surfaces are slippery. The textured patch on an older bath also wears down over time.

Typical reasons for a call-out include:

  • Resurfaced baths that are now too smooth
  • A bath or tray that is slippery when wet
  • Bath mats that harbour mould or get forgotten
  • Safety for older or less mobile people

What to look for in a quote

  • Who will actually do the work
  • How long the guarantee is and what it covers
  • What happens if the damage is worse than the photos show
  • Is the price fixed, and does it include VAT?

10 questions to ask before you book

Prices and what affects them

A fixed quote means you know the cost before booking. We take into account:

  • The type of damage
  • The material and finish
  • Whether we combine several jobs
  • How much damage there is

Rather than charging by the hour, we fix the price before we start. Damage, material and access decide it, and doing several items at once reduces it.

How to get a fixed price

You can usually get a fixed price without us visiting. To help us price it:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • A wider photo showing the entire bath or shower tray
  • Any details about the material
  • Something in shot to show the size

We price from pictures so you don’t have to wait in for a survey. Use the quote form, or ring 0345 017 0787 to talk it through.

Questions from Barnacle

What happens if you find more damage?

It’s rare, but if it happens we talk to you first. The price only changes if you agree.

Do you come to Barnacle?

Yes. We cover the entire UK and travel to Barnacle. Send photos and we’ll quote, or call 0345 017 0787.

Are there extra charges for Barnacle?

There’s no separate call-out charge. The fixed quote covers the visit and the work.

How do I clean it?

Yes. A soft brush and mild cleaner is all it needs.

Is a repair better than a new one?

In most cases, yes. A repair skips the removal, fitting and redecorating. We will be honest if it’s not worth it.

Do I need to be at home?

Yes. The technician needs access to the room for the visit, at a time that suits you.

What do you need from me?

Send photos through the quote form or call 0345 017 0787, and we’ll do the rest.

Will a non-slip coating change how my bath looks?

Very little: it shows as a matt area where you stand.

For landlords and businesses

Housing associations and facilities teams use us for planned and reactive repairs in Coventry and across the UK. Repairing in place avoids the disruption of a replacement, which matters when someone is living in the home.

Rented homes see more wear and tear, and replacing things at every changeover adds up. Repairing between tenants keeps the property presentable for less.

What a repair cannot fix

We’ll always be straight with you, so here’s what a repair cannot fix:

  • Surfaces that are already damaged or peeling (these need repairing first)
  • Textured areas still wet or recently cleaned with oily products
  • Outdoor surfaces

Not sure? Send photos and we’ll give you a straight answer.
