Bath repair across CT5: what to expect

Chips, cracks, rust spots and small holes is repaired in place. Nothing is unplumbed, the tiles aren’t touched, and the repaired area is colour-matched so it blends in. Typical jobs include rust by the waste and overflow and an old repair that has yellowed or come loose, on acrylic, roll-top & freestanding and whirlpool & spa baths.

We agree an arrival time beforehand, so you know when to expect us. Once we’re there, the work takes two to three hours for most chips for most jobs. The room is left tidy and ready to use once it has cured.

  1. Dust sheets and masking go down around the bath.
  2. The damaged area is cleaned, keyed and degreased.
  3. Filler goes in and is sanded flush once it has set.
  4. Colour and gloss are matched to the surrounding surface.
  5. We clear up and give you the curing time, normally until the next day.

What we are called out for in CT5

Heavy toiletries are the biggest single cause of chips, closely followed by shower heads. Fittings cause damage too: water sits around them, and any chip there soon rusts.

The most common problems we are called about are:

  • Snagging damage from a refit
  • Damage beneath the taps
  • Chips on the rim or sides
  • Cracks in an acrylic bath

Can I fix it myself?

A DIY attempt isn’t a disaster. We remove the old filler and start again, so it doesn’t stop a professional repair. Just mention it when you send pictures, as it can add time.

For a hairline mark somewhere you will never see, a kit may be enough. For anything you look at every day, anything that has rusted, cracked or holed, or anything on a coloured surface, a professional repair is worth it.

When a repair isn’t the answer

We will not take on work that will not last, so these are the limits:

  • A steel bath rusted through
  • Flexing caused by a failed cradle or loose feet
  • Cracks in acrylic we can’t reach from underneath

Aftercare tips

Most damage we see is avoidable. A few tips:

  • Have new chips seen to early
  • Avoid scourers, wire wool and gritty cream cleaners
  • A dripping tap stains enamel, so fix it early
  • Rinse it down after each bath

Keep metal objects like razors and cans off the surface, as they can leave rust marks. A dripping tap should be fixed early, too.

If an acrylic bath has a crack, stop showering in it until it’s repaired. Each time it flexes, the crack grows, and it can start to leak underneath.

Repair or replace?

Cast iron baths in particular are worth repairing: getting one out, particularly from an upstairs bathroom, is a big job, and a like-for-like replacement can be expensive. A repair keeps it in place.

What your quote should include

  • A fixed price, and whether VAT is included
  • How long it needs to cure
  • What happens if the damage is worse than the pictures show
  • How the room is protected while they work
