Bath repair across EX11: what to expect

It pays to repair bath damage while it’s small. Exposed metal on enamelled baths soon rusts, and on acrylic, a crack keeps spreading while the bath flexes. A repair stops both. We’re frequently asked to fix chips along the edge of the bath and damage beneath the taps, in whirlpool & spa baths, cast iron enamel and roll-top & freestanding.

Once we are through the door, the aim is to do the job without disturbing the rest of your home. Surfaces nearby are masked off, the work takes a few hours, depending on what we find, and we finish with a tidy-up and a look at the finished work together.

  1. We start by looking at the damage and confirming the plan with you.
  2. Any rust and loose material comes out, and the area is degreased.
  3. We build up the filler in layers, shaping it to the bath.
  4. The colour is tinted by hand until it matches.
  5. Finally, it’s polished to match the shine and left to cure.

What a repair can’t fix

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • Water coming from the waste or taps rather than the bath
  • Rust that has eaten right through a steel bath
  • Wear across the whole surface, which needs re-enamelling

Why repair rather than replace?

Many people think a damaged bath means a new one. In most cases it does not: a proper repair gives it years more use, without the cost and upheaval of replacing it.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Who turns up on the day
  • What happens if the damage is worse than the pictures show
  • Aftercare advice
  • What protection goes down before work starts

Should I try a DIY kit first?

A DIY attempt is not a disaster. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it will not stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send pictures.

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler often lifts.

Aftercare tips

Good habits make a big difference to how long a repair lasts:

  • Get a dripping tap fixed promptly
  • Keep metal cans and razors off the surface
  • Cover the bath during DIY or decorating
  • Have new chips seen to early

There is nothing special to do after a repair. Skip bleach and gritty creams.

Tape over a fresh chip or crack until it’s repaired, to keep water out. Take it off before we arrive.

Repairs by material

Cast iron

Cast iron is heavy and rigid, finished with fired enamel. A chip down to the iron can rust, but the bath itself lasts for generations, so it’s always worth repairing.

Acrylic

Acrylic baths are moulded sheet reinforced underneath. They don’t rust, but they can crack, scratch or be holed, and a crack only stays repaired if it’s supported underneath.

Common questions in EX11

When can you do it?

It depends on the time of year and where you are. Send pictures with your postcode and we will reply with the earliest dates.

Will there be a smell?

A little, depending on the job. Ventilation keeps it to a minimum, and it soon fades.

Is a holed acrylic bath repairable?

Frequently, if there’s access underneath. We back the hole, fill it and refinish the surface.

Is a cracked acrylic bath repairable?

Often, yes, if we can reach the underside to reinforce it. Take off the bath panel and check, or send us a photo.

Can you fix rust around the plughole?

Yes. We take out the rust and any loose enamel, fill the area, then colour-match the finish.

Do you come to EX11?

Yes. We work across the UK and travel to EX11. Send pictures and we will quote, or call 0345 017 0787.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

Usually, when the rest is in good condition. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. We will tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.
