How bath repair works in EX5
Bath repair is our most common job. A chip by the taps, a crack in the base and a rust spot by the plughole are all fixed without removing the bath, normally in one visit. We work on whirlpool & spa baths, cast iron enamel and acrylic, and people most frequently call us about rusty patches near the plughole and chips on the rim or sides.
We work cleanly and quietly, so you can carry on at home. We protect the area first, then the work takes a morning or an afternoon. At the end we talk you through the curing time and the aftercare.
- We start by cleaning the damage and taking out loose enamel and rust.
- The chip or crack is filled, then sanded level with the bath.
- The colour is mixed on the spot to match your bath.
- We apply the finish coats and polish the repair so it blends in.
- We leave it to cure; you can usually use the bath the day after.
What you’ll pay
Prices start from £95. Our prices are the same across the UK, with no extra for EX5. The job itself decides the price: how much damage, what it’s made of and how many items.
Why choose Surface Doctor
- One-year guarantee on every repair
- Fixed prices from your photos
- Usually one visit, start to finish
- Colour mixed on the day to match
How to get a price
To get a price, send a couple of photos using our quote form or ring us. We will say straight away whether it can be repaired.
Landmarks near Cranbrook
Locally, our jobs take us to homes close to Cranberry Farm pub, Rockbeare Church of England Primary School and Pre-School and Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, among other places. Nearby too are Clyst Vale Community College (1.7 miles west) and Cranbrook country park (less than half a mile west). For rail, the closest station is Cranbrook (Devon) station, about 0.8 miles west. A little further out are Heavitree Isolation Hospital (3.3 miles south-west). The countryside around Cranbrook includes Aylesbeare Common RSPB reserve.
What affects the price in EX5
Prices start from £95. There are no hourly rates or hidden extras. The price is based on:
- Doing more than one item at once
- How much damage there is
- Whether old repairs or coatings need taking off
- Unusual colours or finishes
No two jobs are quite the same, so we price each one individually. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.
Send pictures for a quote
Phone photos are fine. Make sure they show:
- One sharp close-up of the damage
- One picture of the whole bath
- Any details about the material
- Natural light rather than flash
For a price in EX5, photos are the quickest way: a close-up, a wider shot and your postcode. You will get a fixed quote with dates to choose from.
Should you replace it?
Cast iron baths especially are worth keeping: they’re very heavy to remove, especially upstairs, and a like-for-like replacement can be expensive. A repair keeps it in place.
Comparing quotes
- Is the price fixed, and does it include VAT?
- What preparation is included
- How long the guarantee is and what it covers
- Who turns up on the day
Looking after it afterwards
Much of the damage we repair could have been avoided. These habits help:
- Avoid scourers, wire wool and gritty cream cleaners
- Put a towel in the bath if you’re working above it
- Rinse the bath after use, especially in hard water areas
- Keep metal cans and razors off the surface
Do not leave razors, cans or hair grips in the bath, as they can leave rust marks. And fix dripping taps promptly.
If an acrylic bath has a crack, stop showering in it until it’s repaired. Each time it flexes, the crack grows, and water can get through to the floor below.
Materials and what they mean for the repair
Cast iron
Cast iron baths are thick and very strong, finished with fired enamel. A chip down to the iron can rust, but the body of the bath lasts a very long time, so it’s always worth repairing.
Pressed steel
Steel baths and trays have a thin metal body under the enamel. Once a chip exposes it, rust follows quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.
Signs you need bath repair
Acrylic baths that crack nearly always have a support problem. Loose legs, no proper cradle or a floor that gives let the bath move.
People generally call us after spotting something like this:
- Scratches you can feel with a fingernail
- Chips on the rim or sides
- Chips under the taps
- Holes from dropped items
