How bath repair works in TS2

It pays to repair bath damage while it’s small. On steel and cast iron, exposed metal starts to rust, while cracks in acrylic grow each time the bath moves. A repair stops both. Our technicians work on acrylic, roll-top & freestanding and pressed steel enamel, and people most frequently call us about scratches you can feel with a fingernail and chips on the rim or sides.

Nothing needs to be moved out of the room beforehand. We bring everything we need with us, lay protective sheets and get going once we’ve agreed what we are doing. Most jobs take a few hours, depending on the damage, and you are welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. Dust sheets and masking go down around the bath.
  2. We clean, key and degrease the damage, and any rust is treated.
  3. Filler goes in and is sanded flush once it has set.
  4. We match both the colour and the shine.
  5. We tidy up and tell you when the bath can be used, typically the day after.

Pricing in TS2

Signs you need bath repair

Heavy toiletries are the biggest single cause of chips, with dropped shower heads close behind. Fittings cause damage too: water collects there, so chips nearby rust quickly.

If you can see any of these, send us a picture:

  • Deep scratches in acrylic
  • Rusty patches near the plughole
  • A kit repair that didn’t last
  • Impact holes in acrylic

Repairs by material

Pressed steel

Steel baths and trays have a thin metal body under the enamel. Once a chip exposes it, rust follows quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.

Composite and resin

Composite baths are dense and solid, and often freestanding. Chips and scratches can be filled and colour-matched, in much the same way.

Should you replace it?

If the rest of the bath is in good condition, a repair is almost always the better choice. It costs less, takes less time and causes far less upheaval, and the bathroom stays as it is. If the entire surface is worn, re-enamelling may make more sense, and we will tell you.

What your quote should include

  • When it can be used again
  • What happens if the damage is worse than the photos show
  • Who will actually do the work
  • What prep work is covered

How to look after the repair

So the finish stays in good condition:

  • Make sure an acrylic bath is firm underfoot
  • Use a soft cloth and washing-up liquid for everyday cleaning
  • Do not scrub with anything abrasive
  • Rinse it down after each bath

In the first few days, avoid putting weight or bottles on the repair. After that, clean it as you would the rest of the bath, avoiding abrasives.

Rust spreads under enamel faster than most people expect. A chip the size of a fingernail can become a much larger patch if it’s left for months, so it pays to deal with it early.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but the repairs we redo most often are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Getting it right first time is generally cheaper.

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and then the old filler has to be removed first.
