Antique and period basins are worth repairing, and we repair around makers’ marks where we can. A like-for-like replacement can be hard to find. We regularly repair ceramic & vitreous china basins, enamelled basins and antique & period basins, and the jobs we see most are a chipped basin edge and an original basin worth saving.

We stand behind the work with a one-year guarantee.

Work for landlords and builders

Hotels, guest houses and holiday lets cannot afford rooms out of action for long, so most of our work is done in a single visit. We’ll fit around changeovers where we can.

We regularly work with letting and managing agents. Just send pictures, the address and how to get access.

The process

Here’s how a visit typically runs: we arrive on time, sheet and mask the area around the job, do the job and clear up. Plan for a couple of hours for most chips from start to finish. Before we go, we’ll explain when it can be used and how to care for it.

  1. First, we check the basin is firm and dry.
  2. The area is degreased and keyed.
  3. Filler is built up and sanded flush.
  4. Colour and gloss are matched.
  5. We tidy up and give you the curing time.

How to prepare

  • Let us know if it has been repaired before
  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area
  • Let us know which floor the room is on

How to get a price

We price from photos so you don’t have to wait in for a survey. Send them through the quote form, or call 0345 017 0787 if you’d rather talk it through.

Advice

What affects the price in Basted

Prices start from £95. We price every job individually, from your photos. The main factors are:

  • The material
  • Unusual colours or finishes
  • How many items we do on one visit
  • Any earlier repairs that need removing first

The price reflects the work involved, not your postcode. The full price is agreed before you book.

Getting a price from photos

Phone photos are fine, there is no need for anything special. Ensure they show:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • A clear, close picture of the problem area
  • What it’s made of, if you know
  • A wider photo showing the whole basin

Getting a quote takes a couple of minutes: take one close-up and one wider shot of the basin, include your postcode and send them over. What comes back is a fixed quote, not a guess.

Basted questions

How do I book?

Send pictures through the quote form or call 0345 017 0787, and we will take it from there.

Can a chip in a sink be fixed?

Yes, very often. We shape and polish it to match the glaze.

Do you cover the whole of Kent?

Everywhere in the UK, Basted included. Travel is included in the price.

Will there be a smell?

Expect a mild smell while we are working that clears as it cures.

Will you leave a mess?

We protect the room with dust sheets and masking first, and we clean up when we’ve finished.

Can you do more than one item on the same visit?

Of course, and it generally saves money. Send pictures of everything together and you will get one combined price.

Do you come to Basted?

Yes, we do. Technicians travel to Basted from across the region, with no extra charge for travel.

Is it OK to have pets in the house?

On the day, the room should be kept clear of pets and children, mainly so nothing gets touched before it has cured.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We remove the old filler and start again, so it will not stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.

You can buy a DIY kit for most repairs, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface isn’t prepared the repair will not last.

When we would advise against a repair

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • Through cracks that let water out
  • Crazing all over, which suits resurfacing
  • A loose basin, until it’s refixed

Not sure? Send pictures and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

Materials we work on in Basted

  • Antique & period basins
  • Vanity unit basins
  • Enamelled basins
  • Belfast and butler sinks
  • Ceramic & vitreous china basins

Repair or replace: which is better?

Basins are frequently built into vanity units or tiled in, so replacing one disturbs more than you’d expect. A repair avoids that. Our sink repair starts from £95. The price depends on the type and amount of damage, what it’s made of and how many jobs we combine into one visit. You get a fixed price from your photos, so there are no surprises on the day.

Why choose Surface Doctor in Basted

  • We will tell you if it’s not worth repairing
  • We leave the room as we found it
  • Nothing taken out or refitted
  • A year’s guarantee on all work

See our prices page.

Aftercare tips

After the repair has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent
  • Do not stand heavy bottles on the edge
  • Use a heat mat for hair tools
  • Have new chips repaired quickly

Do not rest hot hair tools or heavy bottles on the rim, so it doesn’t get chipped again.

Cracks by the tap holes can grow, so get it looked at early. If it’s leaking, turn off the water to the basin until it’s checked.
