How we handle sink repair in Foveran

Whether it’s a chipped rim or a crack by the tap holes, basin damage is typically repaired in place. The taps stay connected and the basin stays on the wall. Common call-outs are for an antique basin with chips and fine cracks across the glaze, on vanity unit basins, enamelled basins and Belfast and butler sinks.

You get a one-year guarantee, the same in Foveran as everywhere else we work.

Work for landlords and builders

Letting agents frequently send us pictures straight from the inventory. You can have a price before you arrange access, and we liaise with tenants about access if you’d like us to.

We work for landlords, letting agents and housing providers in Foveran as well as householders. Repairing between tenancies keeps void periods short, and it costs much less than replacing.

Foveran questions

Is repairing better than replacing?

Usually, if the item is otherwise sound. A repair avoids removal and making good. If replacing would be better, we will say so.

Will the price change on the day?

Your quote covers the damage in the photos. If there is more, we will tell you before starting.

Are there extra charges for Foveran?

There is no separate call-out charge. Your fixed price includes everything.

Can pets and children be at home?

Yes, as long as they stay out of the room we’re working in. We will tell you when the room can be used again.

How soon can you come?

We’ll give you dates with your quote. If it’s urgent, say so and we will do what we can.

Is a chipped basin repairable?

Yes. The chip is filled, matched and polished.

Are you a vetted contractor?

We’re accredited with CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile.

Can you repair an antique basin?

Yes. Where possible, we work around makers’ marks. Tell us about it when you send photos.

Honest limits

Some jobs aren’t right for a repair, for example:

  • A basin cracked through and leaking
  • Leaking taps or wastes (a plumber’s job)
  • Crazing all over, which suits resurfacing

Send us photos and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Materials we repair

  • Antique & period basins
  • Belfast and butler sinks
  • Ceramic & vitreous china basins
  • Enamelled basins
  • Vanity unit basins

How it works

Expect a friendly, tidy visit. We confirm the time with you beforehand, protect the area, then carry out the work, which typically takes a morning or an afternoon. If we find something your pictures didn’t show, we’ll explain it before carrying on.

  1. The vanity, floor and taps are protected.
  2. We clean and prepare the chip or crack.
  3. We fill it and shape it to the basin’s curve.
  4. The colour is matched by hand.
  5. We polish it to match the shine and leave it to cure.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about any previous repairs or coatings
  • Let us know about parking or access

Advice

Can I fix it myself?

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it won’t stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send pictures.

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Getting it right first time is generally cheaper.

Aftercare tips

Once the work has cured, treat it gently:

  • Ask a plumber not to overtighten fittings
  • Get chips repaired early
  • Keep straighteners away from the basin
  • Store toiletries on a shelf

Keep hair straighteners and heavy bottles away from the basin edge, to avoid new chips.

An unrepaired chip soon stains, so the sooner it’s repaired, the better.

What sink repair costs

Prices start from £95. Prices are worked out job by job. The main factors are:

  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • Whether we combine several jobs
  • How hard the colour is to match
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out

The price reflects the work involved, not your postcode. You’ll see the full price before booking, with nothing added on the day.

Getting a price from photos

It only takes a minute to photograph the damage, and it saves a visit. Please include:

  • The material, if you know it
  • A coin beside the damage so we can judge size
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any earlier repairs or coatings

To get a price, send two or three photos through our quote form or ring us. We will tell you honestly whether it can be repaired.

Different materials, different repairs

Composite and resin

Many vanity units have resin or composite basins. They repair well, with colour mixed on site.

Period and antique

Older basins may have crazing, chips and makers’ marks. We repair them sympathetically and leave the character intact.

Repair or replace: which is better?

A new basin may mean new taps, a new waste and new tiling, and if it’s part of a suite, it may not match. A repair avoids all of that. Our sink repair starts from £95. Set against the cost of replacement, a repair is typically a fraction of the price, because there’s no removal, plumbing or making good. Your fixed quote shows exactly what’s included.
