Sink repair in Hankham, done in place

Antique and period basins are worth repairing, and we work around makers’ marks wherever possible. Replacing them with something similar can be difficult. Our technicians work on Belfast and butler sinks, ceramic & vitreous china basins and vanity unit basins, and people most often call us about chips from dropped toiletries and an original basin worth saving.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything isn’t right, ring us and we’ll sort it.

Repair or replace: which is better?

A basin cracked through and leaking needs replacing. For chips, surface cracks and crazing, a repair is typically best. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. The price depends on how much damage there is and what kind, what it’s made of and how many items we do on one visit. We give a fixed price from your pictures, so you know the cost before booking.

What happens on the day

A typical visit goes like this: we arrive at the agreed slot, sheet and mask the area around the job, carry out the work and tidy away. Allow a couple of hours for most chips from start to finish. Before leaving, we tell you how long to leave it and what to avoid for the first few days.

  1. We start by cleaning the basin and assessing the damage.
  2. We fill the chip or crack and shape it to the original profile.
  3. We colour-match the finish to the glaze.
  4. We polish it into the surrounding surface.
  5. The basin can generally be used later that day or the day after.

Before we arrive

  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area
  • Let us know if it has been repaired before
  • Tell us if there are stairs or a lift

Advice

Can I fix it myself?

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We remove the old filler and start again, so it will not stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.

For a hairline mark somewhere you’ll never see, a kit may be enough. For anything you look at every day, anything that has rusted, cracked or holed, or anything on a coloured surface, a professional repair is worth it.

What a repair can’t fix

A repair isn’t right for every job, including:

  • Glaze crazing across the entire basin, where resurfacing is better
  • A basin cracked through and leaking
  • Leaking taps or wastes (a plumber’s job)

Send us photos and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Hankham questions

Are there extra charges for Hankham?

We don’t add a call-out fee. The fixed price covers the visit and the work.

Do the materials smell?

A little, depending on the job. Open windows and an extractor fan help, and it soon fades.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. We work for landlords, agents, builders and businesses as well as householders in Hankham.

Will you remove the sink?

Not at all. We protect the area around it and work in place.

Does someone need to be in?

We need someone to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

What happens once I’ve sent pictures?

We review the photos and send a fixed quote.

Is repairing better than replacing?

Generally, when the rest is in good condition. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. We will tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.

Can you price it without visiting?

Nearly always. If photos don’t show enough, we will ask for another angle.

Repairs by material

Composite and resin

Many vanity units have resin or composite basins. They repair well, and the colour is mixed to suit.

Period and antique

Older basins may have crazing, chips and makers’ marks. We repair carefully around original features.

Looking after it afterwards

It’s all simple stuff, just a few sensible habits:

  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent
  • Do not stand heavy bottles on the edge
  • Get chips repaired early
  • Do not rest hot hair tools on the basin

Keep hair straighteners and heavy bottles away from the basin edge, to avoid new chips.

A chip near the waste or taps can let water into the body of the basin, which can stain the repair area. Repairing it early keeps the job small.

For landlords and businesses

We also carry out snagging repairs for builders and developers, fixing chips and scratches before handover. We’re CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited.

We regularly work with letting and managing agents. Just send photos, the address and how to get access and we will arrange it.
