Before and after: a damaged ceramic basin restored

Repair or replace: which is better?

Swapping a basin frequently brings new taps, a new waste and tiling work, and if it’s part of a suite, it may not match. A repair avoids all of that. Prices start from £95. It helps to know what pushes a price up or down: access, material, the extent of the damage and whether we can do several items together. Send photos and you’ll get a fixed figure.

Can I fix it myself?

A DIY attempt isn’t a disaster. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it will not stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.

If you are set on a kit, follow its instructions closely, make sure the area is clean and completely dry, and give it the full curing time. If it does not work out, we can still repair it properly.

Keeping it looking good

Aftercare is simple:

  • Do not stand heavy bottles on the edge
  • Use gentle cleaners
  • Keep straighteners away from the basin
  • Repair chips before they stain

Wipe the basin over after use, and avoid strong bleach or descalers.

A chip near the waste or taps can let water into the body of the basin, which can stain the repair area. Early repair keeps it a small job.

When a repair isn’t the answer

It helps to know what we can’t do too:

  • Widespread crazing
  • A basin cracked through and leaking
  • Leaking taps or wastes (a plumber’s job)

Not sure? Send pictures and we’ll give you a straight answer.

The process

Your technician turns up when we said we would, introduces themselves and looks over the damage before anything else. Dust sheets and masking tape go down before any work starts. The work itself takes a couple of hours for most chips, and we leave the room as we found it.

  1. We check the basin is secure and not leaking.
  2. The area is degreased and keyed.
  3. Filler is built up and sanded flush.
  4. We match the colour and the gloss.
  5. We tidy up and give you the curing time.

A quote takes minutes to ask for: take one close-up and one wider shot of the basin, add your postcode and send them to us. What comes back is a fixed price, not a guess.

Advice

Questions from Roby Mill

Can you repair a chipped basin?

Yes, very often. The repair is shaped and polished to blend in.

Can you keep the maker’s mark?

Yes, carefully. We repair them without hiding their character.

What happens after I send pictures?

We look at the photos and reply with a fixed price and some dates. If anything’s unclear, we’ll ask for another photo.

Will it make a mess?

We protect the room with dust sheets and masking first, and tidy up before we leave.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Of course, and it typically saves money. Just add the extra items to your pictures and we will quote them together.

Do you need to take the basin off the wall?

No. We repair it where it is, with the taps left connected.

Will there be a smell?

A little, depending on the job. Open windows and an extractor fan help, and it soon fades.

Can you redo someone else’s repair?

Generally, yes. Let us know what was used before.

What your basin is made of matters

Period and antique

Older basins may have crazing, chips and makers’ marks. We repair them sympathetically and leave the character intact.

Composite and resin

Many vanity units have resin or composite basins. They repair well, and the colour is mixed to suit.

Landlords, agents and businesses in Roby Mill

We’re used to working with agents and managing companies. Send the address, pictures and access details and we will arrange it.

Housing associations and facilities teams use us for planned and reactive repairs in Lancashire and across the UK. A repair avoids taking out and refitting, which is easier on the people living there.

What affects the price in Roby Mill

Repairs from £95. We don’t charge extra for travel to Roby Mill. The price depends on:

  • The material and finish
  • Any earlier repairs that need removing first
  • How easy the damage is to reach
  • Whether we combine several jobs

We do not add extras on the day. What we quote from your photos is what you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.

Quotes from your pictures

We price nearly every job from photos. This is what we need:

  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale
  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare
  • What it’s made of, if you know
  • Whether it’s been repaired or coated before

There is no need for us to visit first. Photos are enough for us to price nearly every job: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we will reply with a fixed price.
