Tile repair for Play Hatch homes

How we handle tile repair in Play Hatch

If a tile moves, it may need relaying first, and we’ll tell you. The tile stays where it is, so there is no need to hunt for a matching tile. Our repair technicians work on floor and wall tiles, ceramic tiles and natural stone & granite, and people most frequently call us about cracked floor tiles and damaged tile edges.

Your repair is guaranteed for a year, as with every job we do. Avoid dropping heavy items on repaired floor tiles, and clean with a pH-neutral cleaner.

How to compare quotes

Repairing versus replacing in Play Hatch

Replacing a tile involves breaking out the old tile, tracking down a matching tile and risking the tiles around it. Repairing it keeps the original tile. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. A repair is priced on what needs doing, not where you live. The full price is agreed before you book.

What you get with us

  • Every repair guaranteed for a year
  • Most jobs done in one visit
  • A fixed quote before booking
  • We leave the room as we found it

How we price tile repair

Prices start from £95. You will not pay by the hour. The price depends on:

  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • The type of damage
  • What the surface is made of
  • The colour and finish to match

Every job is a little different, so we price each one individually. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

How to get a fixed price

You can generally get a fixed price without us visiting. To help us price it:

  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale
  • Details of any past repairs
  • One sharp close-up of the damage

Email us a picture of the damage and one of the whole item, with your RG4 postcode, and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

Play Hatch: your questions answered

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

Typically, when the rest is in good condition. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. We will tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.

Do I need to be at home?

We need someone to let us in. After that, you can carry on with your day.

Can you repair a cracked floor tile without replacing it?

Often, yes, as long as it’s still firmly stuck down.

Do you cover the whole of Reading?

All of Reading, and the rest of the UK. Travel is included in the price.

Is there a guarantee?

Yes: twelve months. If there’s a problem with the work in that time, we come back and put it right.

Are you a vetted contractor?

Yes. Our accreditations include CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor. See our accreditations page for the full list.

Can you price it without visiting?

Nearly always. If pictures don’t show enough, we’ll ask for another angle.

Is it messy?

No. The work area is masked and covered, and we leave the room clean.

The process

Arrival times are agreed in advance, so you know when to expect us. Once we’re there, the work takes a morning or an afternoon for most jobs. We leave the room clean and you will know when it can be used.

  1. We clean the tile and remove loose fragments.
  2. The chip, crack or hole is filled.
  3. We shape the repair flush with the tile.
  4. The colour and pattern are recreated by hand.
  5. The repair is sealed to suit the tile’s finish.

Preparing for the visit

  • Avoid using the area for a few hours before we arrive
  • Let us know which floor the room is on
  • Tell us about parking, stairs or access

Advice

Can I fix it myself?

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We prepare the area properly, mix the colour on site and polish the finish to match, then guarantee it for a year.

For a hairline mark somewhere you’ll never see, a kit may be enough. For damage in plain view, cracks, holes or rust, or coloured finishes, a professional repair is worth it.

Honest limits

Some jobs aren’t right for a repair, for example:

  • Loose or hollow tiles that need relaying
  • Cracks caused by a moving floor, until the floor is fixed
  • Whole walls of failing grout

If in doubt, send photos and we’ll say what we think.
