Keeping it looking good

After the repair has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Do not leave spills to soak in
  • Dry around the sink and joints
  • Keep a trivet by the hob
  • Keep wood oiled

Wipe water away from joints and around the sink, particularly with laminate and timber.

A chip on an edge can grow, and on laminate, water can get into the core. Repairing it early stops that.

Worktop repair at your home in The Knap

The hard part of a worktop repair is matching the pattern. Colour, flecks and veining are recreated by hand so the repair blends in. We work on solid surface (such as Corian), solid wood and granite & marble, and common reasons people get in touch are knife marks and damage around the sink cut-out.

You get a one-year guarantee, the same in The Knap as everywhere else we work.

The process

You do not need to empty the room beforehand. We bring everything we need with us, put protection down and start once you’re happy with the plan. It generally takes a morning or an afternoon, and you’re welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. We look at the damage and the worktop’s finish.
  2. Burnt or loose material is cut back.
  3. The area is filled and shaped.
  4. The pattern, flecks or grain are recreated.
  5. It’s finished to the same sheen and left to cure.

How to prepare

  • Open a window if you can
  • Mention if the room is upstairs or in a flat
  • Let the surface dry out before the visit

Your questions about worktop repair in The Knap

Can you price it without visiting?

Yes, almost always. A close-up and a wider photo are enough to give a fixed quote.

Can you match the pattern on my worktop?

Yes, the pattern is built up by hand.

Do you cover the entire of the Vale of Glamorgan?

Across the UK. Our prices are the same everywhere.

Do you repair quartz?

Yes. Chips on edges and around the sink are very common repairs, matched and polished.

Can you do more than one item on the same visit?

Yes. Doing several items on one visit normally costs less than separate visits. Send photos of everything you’d like done.

Is repairing better than replacing?

Generally, yes. Replacement brings removal, refitting and making good, which a repair avoids. If it is not worth repairing, we will tell you.

Can you repair a burn in a worktop?

Generally. Send us a photo and we’ll tell you what’s possible.

Is it safe with children and pets around?

On the day, the room should be kept clear of pets and children, mainly so nothing gets touched before it has cured.

Should you replace it?

Swollen or badly damaged laminate may need replacing. For chips, burns and scratches, a repair is the better value. Our worktop repair starts from £95. Instead of hourly rates, we fix the price before we start. It depends on the damage, the material and access, and doing several items at once reduces it.

DIY kit or professional repair?

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We prepare the area properly, mix the colour on site and polish the finish to match, then guarantee it for a year.

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can make a small mark look better. The trouble is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface is not prepared the repair won’t last.

Honest limits

In fairness, there are a few things a repair won’t fix:

  • Discolouration deep in quartz
  • A worktop that has moved because its support has failed
  • Water-swollen laminate

If in doubt, send pictures and we will say what we think before you book.

Surfaces we repair

  • Laminate
  • Quartz
  • Solid surface (such as Corian)
  • Solid wood
  • Granite & marble

Work for landlords and builders

Hospitality businesses cannot afford rooms out of action for long, so we keep visits short and tidy. We will fit around changeovers where we can.

We carry out planned and one-off repairs for housing associations and facilities teams. Repairing in place avoids the disruption of a replacement, which matters when someone is living in the home.

Repairs by material

Quartz

Quartz worktops are mostly stone set in resin. Edge chips are very common, and we fill and polish them.

Solid surface

Solid surface materials are uniform throughout, so scratches and burns can often be sanded out and refinished.

How we price worktop repair

Repairs from £95. You will not pay by the hour. The price is based on:

  • The type of damage
  • How hard the colour is to match
  • Any earlier repairs that need removing first
  • Doing more than one item at once

Our prices are the same across the UK, with no extra for The Knap. What changes the price is the job itself: the material, the amount of damage and how many items.

Send pictures for a quote

Two or three clear photos are generally enough. It helps if you send:

  • Any details about the material
  • Any earlier repairs or coatings
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale
  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare

Most clients in The Knap get their price from photos. Tell us what happened and where you are, and we’ll reply with a fixed quote and the earliest dates we have.
