The Row questions

Do I have to be there?

Yes. We need access to the room while we work, at a time we agree with you.

Do you cover the entire of Lancashire?

All of Lancashire, and the rest of the UK. There is no extra charge for travel.

Is repairing better than replacing?

Generally, if the item is otherwise sound. A repair avoids removal and making good. If replacing would be better, we will say so.

Can you quote from photos?

Usually, yes. A close-up and a wider photo are enough to give a fixed price.

What if the damage is worse than the photos show?

We will show you and explain before doing anything extra. You won’t be charged for anything you haven’t agreed.

Do you come to The Row?

We do. We send a technician to The Row for every job, with no extra charge for travel.

Can tenants book a repair?

Yes, but check with your landlord or agent first. Landlords are frequently glad to have it sorted before the end of a tenancy.

Do you do work for letting agents?

We do, regularly. We can quote for several properties together and work between tenancies.

Aftercare tips

So the finish stays in good condition for years:

  • Dry around the sink and joints
  • Chopping boards prevent scratches
  • Don’t leave spills to soak in
  • Oil wooden tops regularly

Hot pans should always go on a trivet. Heat can mark quartz and stone as well.

Edge chips can get bigger, and water can reach the core of laminate. An early repair prevents it.

Common problems we fix in The Row

Kitchen worktops have a hard life. Hot pans scorch, knives cut, and edges chip when heavy pans or tins hit them.

Look out for these signs:

  • A dent from a dropped pan
  • Scorch marks from pans
  • Chips caused during installation
  • Chips in quartz or granite

What your quote should include

  • Aftercare advice
  • How long it needs to cure
  • Who turns up on the day
  • A fixed price, and whether VAT is included

Our hiring checklist

What worktop repair costs

Repairs from £95. There is no area surcharge for The Row. What changes the price is:

  • The material and finish
  • How easy the damage is to reach
  • Whether old repairs or coatings need taking off
  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear

We charge the same wherever you are, so there is no premium for The Row. The job itself decides the price: how much damage, what it’s made of and how many items.

Getting a price from pictures

When you take your pictures, these tips help us give you a firm price:

  • One picture of the whole worktop
  • Daylight if possible, and no flash reflection
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any earlier repairs or coatings

The quickest way to a price is to send two or three photos using our quote form or call us. We’ll tell you honestly if a repair is the right fix.

How it works

We begin by going over the job with you, so you know exactly what we’re doing. After that, protection goes down around the work area and we start. It normally takes a few hours, and we’ll tell you if anything changes.

  1. First, we check the damage and the finish we need to match.
  2. We cut back any burnt or loose material.
  3. The area is filled and shaped.
  4. We recreate the pattern, flecks or grain.
  5. We finish it to match the sheen and leave it to cure.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area around the damage
  • Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing
  • Have a window or extractor fan available

DIY repairs versus a professional job

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but the repairs we redo most often are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Getting it right first time is typically cheaper.

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface isn’t prepared the repair will not last.

What a repair can’t fix

Honesty matters more than a booking, so here’s what a repair can’t fix:

  • Through cracks in stone that is moving
  • Deep heat discolouration in quartz, which may not fully disappear
  • Failed support under the worktop

If in doubt, send photos and we’ll say what we think.

Materials we repair

  • Solid wood
  • Laminate
  • Granite & marble
  • Solid surface (such as Corian)
  • Quartz

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Granite and stone

Natural stone worktops chip at edges and around cut-outs. The repair is filled and polished to the stone’s finish.

Laminate

Laminate is a printed surface over a board. We fill the damage and recreate the pattern.

Repair or replace: which is better?

If the worktop is swollen by water or badly damaged along its length, replacement may be the answer. For chips, burns and scratches, repair is generally far better value. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. We do not add extras on the day. What we quote from your pictures is what you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.
