Can I fix it myself?

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The risk is that a kit repair hides the damage for a while, then fails, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

If you’re set on a kit, follow its instructions closely and work on a clean, dry surface, and do not use it until it has fully cured. If it does not work out, we can still repair it properly.

Repairs by material

Pressed steel

Steel baths re-enamel well, once any rust has been treated. Steel often rusts by the plughole, so we check it carefully.

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are the classic candidate for re-enamelling. The body lasts for generations; only the enamel wears, so resurfacing gives them a new life.

The process

We turn up at the time we agreed with you and looks over the damage before anything else. The floor and nearby surfaces are covered before we open a single tin. The work itself takes most of the day, and we leave the room as we found it.

  1. We mask and protect the room and ventilate it.
  2. The bath is cleaned, degreased and any chips or rust repaired.
  3. The surface is prepared and a bonding primer applied.
  4. We spray on the new enamel finish in several coats.
  5. Once cured, normally by the day after, the bath is ready.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Mention any parking restrictions or tricky access
  • Ensure the room can be ventilated

Advice

Boldmere: your questions answered

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

We do, regularly. We can quote for several properties together and work between tenancies.

How long does re-enamelling last?

That depends on preparation and how the bath is treated. Properly prepared and looked after, it lasts well, and it’s guaranteed for a year.

Which areas do you work in?

We cover the entire UK, including Boldmere and the rest of Birmingham. Just include your postcode and we will confirm dates.

How long does re-enamelling take?

Generally one day, with the bath ready the day after. Deeply pitted baths may need a second day.

Do the materials smell?

Some materials have a smell while they’re applied, so we ventilate the room. It fades as everything cures.

Do you come to Boldmere?

Yes, we do. Repair technicians travel to Boldmere from across the region, and the price is the same as everywhere else.

Can you change the colour of my bath?

Yes. We can resurface a coloured bath in white, and we can do the rest of the suite as well.

Do you hold any accreditations?

We hold CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile accreditations.

Prices and what affects them

Prices start from £350. Every quote is fixed and free. What we take into account:

  • The type of damage
  • How hard the colour is to match
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • The material

Our prices are the same across the UK, with no extra for Boldmere. What changes the price is the job itself: how much damage, what it’s made of and how many items.

Quotes from your pictures

Good pictures mean an accurate price. Here’s what we find most useful:

  • Details of any past repairs
  • A picture taken from further back
  • Natural light rather than flash
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale

Getting a quote takes a couple of minutes: take one close-up and one wider shot of the bath, include your postcode and send them over. You will get a fixed price, not an estimate.

Aftercare tips

Nothing complicated is needed:

  • Leave the bath for the full curing time before using it
  • Keep suction mats out of the bath
  • Fix dripping taps quickly
  • A quick wipe after use keeps limescale away

The first few days matter most: let it cure fully, then use mild cleaners only. From then on, avoid abrasives and suction mats.

Rust spots on a worn bath get worse with time and make the job bigger. It’s simpler to resurface before they spread.

What we cannot put right

It helps to know what we can’t do too:

  • Acrylic that moves when you stand in it
  • Anything hidden under an old coating, until we remove it
  • A metal bath with a through crack

Send us photos and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Surfaces we repair

  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Cast iron baths
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Acrylic baths

When to call us in Boldmere

Older baths often have several problems at once: dull areas, chips, rust and staining. Resurfacing sorts them out together.

These are the problems we’re asked about most:

  • A bath in a colour that no longer suits
  • A period or roll-top bath worth keeping
  • Thin, worn enamel in places
  • Enamel that is lost its shine and feels rough

  • Whether there are any call-out or travel charges
  • The length of the guarantee and what it covers
  • How your room will be protected

10 questions to ask before booking

Should you replace it?

Replacing the bath means a plumber, removing a heavy bath, re-tiling or making good the walls and days without a bathroom. Resurfacing gives the bath a new finish with the bath left where it is. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. A repair is priced on what needs doing, not your postcode. You’ll see the full price before booking.
