Bath re-enamelling at your home in Edinburgh

Cast iron, steel, acrylic, roll-top and period baths can all be resurfaced. Several coats of finish go on over a bonding primer, after the bath has been cleaned, repaired and keyed. We are often asked to fix brown or grey marks that don’t clean off and a peeling or bubbling previous coating, on pressed steel baths, basins & shower trays and acrylic baths.

You are covered after we leave: each job carries a one-year guarantee, and we explain what it covers before you book.

Surface Doctor technician refinishing the outside of a roll-top bath

How it works

On the day itself, there’s little for you to do. Let us in and show us the room, and we’ll take it from there. Most visits take the best part of a day, including clearing up.

  1. We mask and protect the room and ventilate it.
  2. Next we degrease the bath and fix chips and rust spots.
  3. The surface is prepared and a bonding primer applied.
  4. We spray several coats of new enamel finish.
  5. The bath is left to cure and can typically be used the following day.

How to prepare

  • Ensure the area is dry
  • Tell us about parking, stairs or access
  • Clear the area around the damage

What your bath is made of matters

Roll-top and period baths

Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, and the outside can be refinished too.

Acrylic

We resurface acrylic baths as well, using a system that bonds to acrylic. It must be solid and not flex underfoot.

Repair or replace: which is better?

Replacement only makes sense in a few cases: a cracked-through bath, a change of size or shape, or a full refit. In most other cases, resurfacing is the better choice. Prices start from £350. Every job is a little different, so we price each one individually. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down.

Edinburgh: your questions answered

Can you re-enamel a roll-top bath?

Yes. We can do the inside and outside if you’d like.

Can you redo someone else’s repair?

Generally, yes. We remove the old repair before doing a new one, so let us know about it.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Yes. Combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down. Send photos of everything you’d like done.

Are you accredited?

We hold CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile accreditations.

What happens once I’ve sent photos?

We come back with a fixed price, usually with dates to choose from. You’re under no obligation.

Which areas do you work in?

Everywhere in the UK, Edinburgh included. There’s no extra charge for travel.

Will there be fumes?

A little, during the work. We set up ventilation and the smell fades as it cures.

Can you resurface a pink bath in white?

Yes. We can resurface a coloured bath in white, and we can do the rest of the suite as well.

What affects the price in Edinburgh

Resurfacing from £350. There’s no charge for travel to Edinburgh. The price comes down to:

  • Unusual colours or finishes
  • What the surface is made of
  • Whether we combine several jobs
  • How easy the damage is to reach

Instead of hourly rates, we price the whole job up front. It depends on the damage, the material and access, and combining items on one visit brings it down.

Send photos for a quote

We price nearly every job from pictures. This is what we need:

  • Daylight if possible, and no flash reflection
  • A close-up of the damage, in focus
  • A picture taken from further back
  • Details of any past repairs

Pricing is simple: snap the damage close up and then the entire item, send them to us with your postcode, and we’ll reply with a fixed quote. There is no charge for the quote and no obligation.

Work for landlords and builders

If you manage property in Edinburgh, we will quote for several properties at once. Just send pictures for each address and we’ll come back with a combined price.

Builders, developers and site managers book us for snagging repairs, fixing chips and scratches before handover so nothing needs replacing. We hold CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accreditations.

Do you need bath re-enamelling in Edinburgh?

In hard water areas, limescale and the cleaning it needs wear enamel faster, and abrasive cleaners do the most damage.

People normally call us when they notice one of these:

  • Lots of chips and rust spots
  • Wear marks under the taps
  • Enamel that is lost its shine and feels rough
  • Staining under the taps and around the waste

  • How long it needs to cure
  • What happens if the damage is worse than the pictures show

10 questions to ask before you book

DIY repairs versus a professional job

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. The trouble is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler often lifts.

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that is fine. We remove the old filler and start again, so it will not stop us repairing it. Just mention it when you send photos, as it can add time.

Aftercare tips

Good habits make a big difference to how long a repair lasts. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Rinse off hair dye, oils and bath bombs straight away
  • Use washing-up liquid and a soft cloth
  • Keep toiletries on a shelf rather than in the bath
  • Repair dripping taps early

Avoid hair dye, bath bombs and oils sitting on the surface, because they can mark the finish. Repair dripping taps promptly.

Don’t try to scrub a worn bath back to shine. It just wears the enamel further and makes resurfacing more work.
