Bath re-enamelling in Lydiate, done in place

Cast iron, steel, acrylic, roll-top and period baths can all be resurfaced. Several coats of finish go on over a bonding primer, after the bath has been cleaned, repaired and keyed. Whether it’s a coating lifting around the plughole and an original cast iron bath that needs restoring, we can usually put it right, on Victorian roll-tops, pressed steel baths and basins & shower trays alike.

Whatever the size of the job, it’s backed by a one-year guarantee.

What we do, step by step

We agree an arrival time beforehand, so you are not left guessing. Once we’re there, the work takes a full day. The room is left tidy and ready to use once it has cured.

  1. We sheet, mask and ventilate the room.
  2. Old sealant is cut out and the bath is deep cleaned.
  3. Chips, rust and pitting are repaired.
  4. We key the bath and apply a bonding primer.
  5. Several coats of finish are sprayed on, then it cures until the next day.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us if there are stairs or a lift
  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Tell us about any previous repairs or coatings

Advice

How we price bath re-enamelling

Prices start from £350. You will not pay by the hour. The price depends on:

  • How much damage there is
  • How easy the damage is to reach
  • The material and finish
  • Whether we combine several jobs

Rather than charging by the hour, we price the whole job up front. Damage, material and access decide it, and doing several items at once reduces it.

Getting a price from photos

Photographing the damage takes a minute. Please include:

  • A photo taken from further back
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale
  • A clear, close picture of the problem area
  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare

For a price in Lydiate, the easiest route is pictures: one close up, one from further back, plus your postcode. You will get a fixed quote with dates to choose from.

Lydiate questions

Do I have to be there?

We need someone to let us in. After that, you can carry on with your day.

Are you a vetted contractor?

Yes. Our accreditations include CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor. The full list is on our accreditations page.

Does the bath have to be removed?

Not at all. We work on the bath in place, with the room protected and ventilated.

Do you charge for travel?

We don’t add a call-out fee. Your fixed price includes everything.

Will the price change on the day?

We stop, show you and agree any change before carrying on. You will not be charged for anything you haven’t agreed.

How long does re-enamelling take?

Most baths are done in a day and can be used the day after. We give you timings with the quote.

What happens next?

We look at the pictures and reply with a fixed quote and some dates. If we need another angle, we’ll ask.

What do you need from me?

A close-up, a wider photo and your postcode. Then we will agree a date.

Different materials, different repairs

Roll-top and period baths

Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, and the outside can be refinished too.

Pressed steel

Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Once a chip exposes it, rust follows quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.

How to care for the repair

Looking after the surface is easy:

  • Store bottles off the bath
  • Have chips seen to early
  • Repair dripping taps early
  • A quick wipe after use keeps limescale away

Rinse the bath and wipe it over after use, particularly where water is hard, to stop limescale building up.

Avoid scrubbing a dull bath with abrasive cleaners. It just wears the enamel further and makes resurfacing more work.

Signs you need bath re-enamelling in Lydiate

By the time a bath is a few decades old, it may have a mix of issues: worn patches, chips, rust spots and stains. Re-enamelling deals with all of them in one go.

The most common problems we’re called about are:

  • A roll-top that’s seen better days
  • Thin, worn enamel in places
  • A coating lifting around the plughole
  • A coloured bath you want in white

Before booking anyone

When we would advise against a repair

Not everything can be repaired, and we’d rather say so up front. We can’t fix:

  • A cast iron or steel bath that’s cracked right through
  • An acrylic bath that flexes badly underfoot
  • Leaking taps or wastes (a plumber’s job)

Not sure? Send pictures and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Materials we repair

  • Cast iron baths
  • Acrylic baths
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Victorian roll-tops

Repairing versus replacing in Lydiate

Replacing a cast iron bath is a big job: they’re heavy, frequently need breaking up, and a new one is not cheap. Re-enamelling avoids all of it. Our bath re-enamelling starts from £350. Set against the cost of replacement, repairing normally costs far less, because there’s no removal, plumbing or making good. Your fixed quote shows exactly what’s included.
