How we handle bath re-enamelling in St Abbs

We clean, repair and prime the bath before spraying the new finish. Most of the work, and most of the durability, is in the preparation, so we do not cut corners on it. Whether it’s a bath in a colour that no longer suits and a coating lifting around the plughole, we can help, whatever the material.

Every job is backed for twelve months, and the guarantee is the same wherever you live. We return to put right any problem with the work.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We remove the old filler and start again, so it does not stop a professional repair. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but the repairs we redo most often are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Getting it right first time is typically cheaper.

The process

On the day itself, there is little for you to do. Show us the job, point us to the room, and we will get on with it. The job generally runs to a full day, including clearing up.

  1. First we look the bath over and confirm the finish.
  2. Everything around the bath is masked and covered.
  3. The bath is degreased, repaired and keyed.
  4. We apply the primer and then the finish coats.
  5. The masking comes off, we tidy up and tell you when it can be used.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure the room can be ventilated
  • Let us know which floor the room is on
  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children

What your bath is made of matters

Roll-top and period baths

Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, and the outside can be refinished too.

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are the classic candidate for re-enamelling. They’re built to last, and only the surface wears, so resurfacing gives them a new life.

Why repair rather than replace?

When the bathroom is fine apart from the bath’s finish, re-enamelling is the least disruptive fix. Tiles, panels and taps stay put. Our bath re-enamelling starts from £350. There are no surprise extras on the day. The price we quote from your pictures is the price you pay, and if the damage turns out to be different, we discuss it before starting.

Why book with us

Honest limits

To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:

  • A metal bath with a through crack
  • Damage hidden under a previous coating, until it’s stripped back
  • Leaks from fittings rather than the bath

Not sure? Send photos and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Surfaces we repair

  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Acrylic baths
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Cast iron baths

Your questions about bath re-enamelling in St Abbs

Can I add another job to the visit?

Of course, and it generally saves money. Send pictures of everything together and we will quote them together.

Is repairing better than replacing?

Generally, when the rest is in good condition. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. We’ll tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.

Can you change the colour of my bath?

Yes. Coloured baths can be resurfaced in white, and the basin and toilet can be done too.

Will the new finish last?

Look after it and it lasts. Avoid abrasive cleaners and suction mats.

Can you price it without visiting?

Nearly always. If photos don’t show enough, we will ask for another angle.

What areas do you cover?

All of the Scottish Borders, and the rest of the UK. There’s no extra charge for travel.

Do you come to St Abbs?

Yes. We cover the entire UK and come to St Abbs. Send us photos for a fixed quote, or call 0345 017 0787.

Do I have to be there?

Yes. We need access to the room while we work, at a time that suits you.

What we are called out for in St Abbs

Many baths we resurface have simply been well used, with nothing wrong except the surface. Underneath, a cast iron or steel bath is usually as strong as ever.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • A bath that stays dull however much you clean it
  • An outdated colour you’d like to change
  • An original cast iron bath that needs restoring
  • A peeling or bubbling previous coating

Builders, developers and site managers book us for snagging repairs, putting right damage done during fitting. We hold CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accreditations.

Looking after it afterwards

After the repair has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Do not leave a chip unrepaired
  • Never use suction bath mats
  • Keep toiletries on a shelf rather than in the bath
  • Dry the bath after use to stop limescale

Dry the bath after use if possible, especially in hard water areas, and rinse away any product left on the surface.

Worn enamel only gets rougher with time, and rust spots spread under the surface. Resurfacing sooner means less repair work first.
