How we handle bath repair in Alt

Repairing baths is what we do most. Chips on the rim, rust around the waste and cracks in acrylic are all fixed without removing the bath, normally in one visit. If you’re dealing with chips on the rim or sides and a chip where the taps sit, we can normally put it right, on cast iron enamel, pressed steel enamel and acrylic alike.

Every repair comes with our one-year guarantee, wherever you are in Oldham.

Alt: your questions answered

Is a holed acrylic bath repairable?

Typically. Photos of the hole and the underside help us check.

When can I have a bath again?

Normally within a day, though it depends on what we’ve done.

Can I get a quote without a visit?

In nearly every case. We only ask to see it in person if the photos can’t show what we need.

Do you do work for letting agents?

Yes, often. We quote for multiple addresses and fit around tenancy changeovers.

How invisible is a bath repair?

On a glossy bath, you will struggle to find it. On worn enamel, it can look shinier than the rest.

Do you hold any accreditations?

We hold CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile accreditations.

Do you come to Alt?

Yes, we do. We send a technician to Alt for every job, and the price is the same as everywhere else.

Can tenants book a repair?

Yes, but check with your landlord or agent first. Landlords are frequently glad to have it sorted.

Prices and what affects them

Prices start from £95. You won’t pay by the hour. The price is based on:

  • Where the damage is and how we get to it
  • The colour and finish to match
  • How much damage there is
  • Any earlier repairs that need removing first

The price reflects the work involved, not your postcode. You’ll see the full price before you book, with nothing added on the day.

Getting a price from pictures

The better the photos, the more accurate the price. Here’s what helps:

  • One sharp close-up of the damage
  • The material, if you know it
  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare
  • One picture of the entire bath

Pricing is simple: take a close-up of the damage and a picture from further back, send them over with your postcode, and you will get a fixed quote back. There’s no charge for the quote and no obligation.

When a repair is not the answer

A repair isn’t right for every job, for example:

  • Leaking fittings, which need a plumber
  • A bath that moves underfoot, until its support is fixed
  • A whole bath that is dull or worn, where a full re-enamel is the better fix

Send us pictures and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Materials we repair

  • Whirlpool & spa baths
  • Pressed steel enamel
  • Acrylic
  • Cast iron enamel
  • Roll-top & freestanding

Can I fix it myself?

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The risk is that a kit repair hides the damage for a while, then fails, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Doing it properly first is usually the cheaper route.

Looking after it afterwards

Simple care helps the repair last. Our advice:

  • Store metal items away from the bath
  • Ensure an acrylic bath is firm underfoot
  • Get any new chip repaired before it rusts
  • Don’t scrub with anything abrasive

Use gentle, non-abrasive cleaners and avoid dropping heavy items on the repaired area. Deal with new chips early, before rust can start.

Until we visit, a strip of waterproof tape over the damage helps, so water cannot get in. Take it off before we arrive.

Why repair rather than replace?

When the bath is otherwise sound, repairing beats replacing. It’s quicker, cheaper and far less disruptive, and the bathroom stays as it is. Where the whole surface is tired, we may suggest re-enamelling instead. Our bath repair starts from £95. We do not add extras on the day. What we quote from your pictures is what you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.

What you get with us

  • Normally one visit, start to finish
  • Work done at your home or business
  • CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited
  • Colour mixed on the day to match

Landlord and trade work in Alt

If you manage property in Alt, we can repair and quote for several addresses together. Just send photos for each address and we’ll come back with a combined price.

For developers and builders, we fix damage before handover. Several plots can be done in one visit to keep costs down.

The process

Your technician turns up at the time we agreed with you, introduces themselves and looks over the damage before anything else. Dust sheets and masking tape go down before any work starts. The work itself takes a few hours, and the room is left clean and tidy.

  1. We protect the bath and the floor around it.
  2. The damaged area is cleaned, keyed and degreased.
  3. Filler goes in and is sanded flush once it has set.
  4. Colour and gloss are matched to the surrounding surface.
  5. We tidy up and tell you when the bath can be used, typically the next day.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Have somewhere for us to park nearby if possible
  • Tell us if there are stairs or a lift
  • Open a window if you can
