Common questions in Carlton

I rent my home. Can I book you?

Yes, but check with your landlord or agent first. Many landlords are happy for a repair to be arranged.

Will the repair show?

We aim for a repair you cannot easily find. The rest of the bath’s condition makes a difference, and we will tell you what to expect.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

Generally, yes. A repair skips the removal, fitting and redecorating. If it is not worth repairing, we will tell you.

I tried a repair kit. Can you fix it?

Regularly. The old material comes out, any rust is treated, then we repair it properly.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes, often. We can quote for several properties together and work between tenancies.

Can you price it without visiting?

In nearly every case. If pictures do not show enough, we will ask for another angle.

Can you fix rust around the plughole?

Yes, very frequently. The rust is cut back to clean metal and sealed before we fill and finish it.

Is it messy?

Dust sheets and masking go down before we start, and we clean up when we have finished.

How we handle bath repair in Carlton

Most bath damage, from chips and cracks to rust spots and holes, is repaired in place. Nothing is unplumbed, your tiles stay as they are, and the finish is matched to the rest of the bath. If you’re dealing with chips on the rim or sides and an old repair that has yellowed or come loose, we can normally put it right.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If something is not right in that time, we come back and put it right.

Keeping it looking good

Much of the damage we repair could have been avoided. A few tips:

  • Stick to mild cleaners and a soft cloth
  • Put a towel in the bath if you are working above it
  • Rinse the bath after use, especially in hard water areas
  • Have new chips seen to early

A repaired bath needs no special treatment, just sensible cleaning. Avoid bleach-based and gritty cleaners and give it a rinse after each bath.

Do not leave a chip on a steel or cast iron bath. Water gets to the metal and rust starts, and a rust spot is a bigger repair than a clean chip.

Honest limits

Not everything can be repaired, and we would rather say so up front. We can’t fix:

  • Wear across the entire surface, which needs re-enamelling
  • Rust that has eaten right through a steel bath
  • Leaking fittings, which need a plumber

If in doubt, send pictures and we will say what we think before booking.

What we work on

  • Pressed steel enamel

How we price bath repair

Prices start from £95. We do not charge extra for travel to Carlton. The price depends on:

  • What the surface is made of
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • Whether we combine several jobs
  • How hard the colour is to match

The price depends on the type and amount of damage, what it’s made of and how many jobs we combine into one visit. You get a fixed price from your pictures, so there are no surprises on the day.

Send pictures for a quote

Two or three clear pictures are normally enough. It helps if you send:

  • A picture taken from further back
  • Details of any past repairs
  • One sharp close-up of the damage
  • What it’s made of, if you know

You don’t need a survey visit. Photos are enough for us to price nearly every job: send a close-up, a wider shot and your postcode, and we will reply with a fixed price.

For developers and builders, we fix damage before handover, so there is no need to replace a damaged item at the last minute. We can visit several plots in one trip.

Landlords, letting agents and housing providers in Carlton use us as well as householders. A repair between tenants keeps the property empty for less time, and it costs much less than replacing.

What happens on the day

We begin by going over the job with you, so you know exactly what we are doing. Then the area is sheeted and masked and the work begins. Allow a few hours, depending on the damage, and we’ll keep you posted as we go.

  1. Dust sheets and masking go down around the bath.
  2. We clean, key and degrease the damage.
  3. We fill it, let it set, then sand it flush.
  4. Colour and gloss are matched to the surrounding surface.
  5. We clear up and give you the curing time, normally until the following day.

How to prepare

  • Point us to the nearest place to park

Should you replace it?

A new bath brings a chain of other jobs: tiles along the rim generally crack when it comes out, the panel may not fit the new one, and the plumbing has to be disconnected and refitted. A repair skips all of it. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. We do not add extras on the day. The price we quote from your pictures is the price you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.

Different materials, different repairs

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that is what we repair.

Acrylic

Acrylic feels warm and is light, but it needs firm support underneath. Cracks are strengthened from behind before the front is finished.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

For a hairline mark somewhere you’ll never see, a kit may be enough. For anything you look at every day, anything that has rusted, cracked or holed, or anything on a coloured surface, a professional repair is worth it.

We understand the appeal of fixing it yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.
