Materials and what they mean for the repair

Pressed steel

Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Once a chip exposes it, rust follows quickly, so the metal is treated and sealed before the repair.

Composite and resin

Composite baths are dense and solid. Chips and scratches can be filled and colour-matched, just like other baths.

About our bath repair in Cropwell Bishop

Most of our bath repairs take a few hours, and the bath is back in use the next day. You won’t need a plumber or tiler, because nothing is disconnected. We work on cast iron enamel, pressed steel enamel and whirlpool & spa baths, and the jobs we see most are snagging damage from a refit and rusty patches near the plughole.

You get a one-year guarantee, the same in Cropwell Bishop as everywhere else we work.

How it works

Once we are through the door, the aim is to do the job without disturbing the rest of your home. Surfaces nearby are masked off, the work takes a few hours, depending on the damage, depending on what we find, and we finish with a tidy-up and a look at the finished work together.

  1. First, we check the damage against your pictures and agree the plan.
  2. Loose enamel, rust and dirt are removed so the repair can bond.
  3. The damage is filled in layers and shaped to the curve of the bath.
  4. We tint the finish by hand to match the bath.
  5. The repair is polished to the same gloss as the bath and left to cure.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Doing it properly first is usually the cheaper route.

If you are set on a kit, follow its instructions closely and work on a clean, dry surface, and don’t use it until it has fully cured. If it fails, we can still put it right.

Aftercare tips

Most damage we see is avoidable. These habits help:

  • Get a dripping tap fixed promptly
  • Keep metal cans and razors off the surface
  • Keep abrasive pads and gritty cleaners away from the bath
  • Rinse it down after each bath

Use gentle, non-abrasive cleaners and avoid dropping heavy items on the repaired area. Get any new chip seen to quickly, before rust can start.

Tape over a fresh chip or crack until it’s repaired, so water can’t get in. Take it off before we arrive.

When we would advise against a repair

We’d rather lose a job than do one that won’t last, so these are the limits:

  • Metal that has corroded all the way through
  • Water coming from the waste or taps rather than the bath
  • A whole bath that’s dull or worn, where a full re-enamel is the better fix

If in doubt, send photos and we will say what we think before you book.

Cropwell Bishop: your questions answered

How invisible is a bath repair?

We aim for a repair you can’t easily find. How well it disappears depends on the condition of the rest of the bath, and we’ll tell you what to expect.

Is repairing better than replacing?

Normally, if the item is otherwise sound. A repair avoids removal and making good. If replacing would be better, we’ll say so.

Do I need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in and show us the job. You do not need to watch us work.

How quickly can you book me in?

That depends on our diary for your area. We’ll offer you dates when we send your quote.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Of course, and it generally saves money. Send pictures of everything together and we’ll quote them together.

Is a bath repair permanent?

Yes, if it’s prepared properly and the bath is sound. It carries our one-year guarantee.

Can you redo someone else’s repair?

Yes, we often do. It can add a little time, which we include in the quote.

Will there be a smell?

There may be a mild smell during the work.

Do you need bath repair in Cropwell Bishop?

Acrylic baths that crack nearly always have a support problem. Loose legs, no proper cradle or a floor that gives let the bath move until it cracks.

Look out for any of the following:

  • A failed DIY repair that’s discoloured or lifting
  • A chip where the taps sit
  • Chips along the edge of the bath
  • Scratches you can feel with a fingernail

What your quote should include

  • How changes to the job are handled
  • How soon you can use it again
  • Whether cleaning and preparation are in the price
  • How long the guarantee is and what it covers

Choosing a repair company

Why repair rather than replace?

A new bath costs more than the bath itself: removal and disposal, plumbing, a new panel, tiling and decorating. With a repair, it’s one visit and one price. Our bath repair starts from £95. The price reflects the work involved, not your postcode. You’ll see the full price before you book, with no extras added later.

What you get with us

  • A fixed quote before you book
  • CHAS and Constructionline accredited
  • We will tell you if it’s not worth repairing
  • Colours mixed by hand to suit your surface
