Bath repair in Lea Valley

Should I try a DIY kit first?

For a hairline mark somewhere you’ll never see, a kit may be enough. For anything you look at every day, anything that has rusted, cracked or holed, or anything on a coloured surface, a professional repair is worth it.

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, and the work is guaranteed.

Bath repair in Lea Valley without replacing anything

We repair enamelled steel, cast iron and acrylic baths. Each material is repaired a little differently: rust is treated on metal baths, while cracks in acrylic are reinforced from underneath. If you’re dealing with a kit repair that didn’t last and deep scratches in acrylic, we can help, whatever the material.

You get a one-year guarantee, the same in Lea Valley as everywhere else we work.

What we do, step by step

Your technician turns up at the time we agreed with you and looks over the damage before anything else. The floor and nearby surfaces are covered before any work starts. The work itself takes two to three hours for most chips, and the room is left clean and tidy.

  1. Dust sheets and masking go down around the bath.
  2. The damaged area is cleaned, keyed and degreased.
  3. Filler goes in and is sanded flush once it has set.
  4. We match both the colour and the shine.
  5. We clear up and give you the curing time, normally until the following day.

How to prepare

  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area
  • Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing
  • Make sure the area is dry

Advice

What your bath is made of matters

Acrylic

An acrylic bath is a moulded sheet strengthened from below. They don’t rust, but they can crack, scratch or be holed, and cracks need support from behind to stay fixed.

Cast iron

A cast iron bath is heavy enough that most people never want to move it. The enamel is the part that wears or chips, and that’s what we repair.

What affects the price in Lea Valley

Prices start from £95. We don’t charge extra for travel to Lea Valley. The price depends on:

  • How hard the colour is to match
  • How many items we do on one visit
  • How much damage there is
  • The type of damage

A repair is priced on what needs doing, not your postcode. You will see the full price before booking.

Getting a price from pictures

We price nearly every job from pictures. This is what we need:

  • A coin beside the damage so we can judge size
  • A close-up of the damage, in focus
  • Whether it’s been repaired or coated before
  • Daylight if possible, and no flash reflection

Pricing is simple: take a close-up of the damage and a picture from further back, send them over with your postcode, and you will get a fixed price back. Quotes are free and you are under no obligation.

Questions from Lea Valley

I tried a repair kit. Can you fix it?

Yes, we do this often. We strip it out, deal with any rust and repair it again.

Do you work in Lea Valley?

Yes, we do. Technicians travel to Lea Valley from across the region, and the price is the same as everywhere else.

Can you fix rust around the plughole?

Yes, it’s one of the most common repairs we do. The rust is cut back to clean metal and sealed before we fill and finish it.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

Usually, if the item is otherwise sound. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. If replacing would be better, we’ll say so.

What happens if you find more damage?

If we find something the pictures didn’t show, we explain it first. You decide whether to go ahead.

Can you price it without visiting?

Nearly always. If pictures don’t show enough, we’ll ask for another angle.

Will there be a smell?

It depends on the job, but often a little. Open windows and an extractor fan help, and it soon fades.

How long does the repair take to cure?

Normally by the following day, depending on the repair.

Repair or replace in Lea Valley?

When the bath is otherwise sound, repairing beats replacing. It’s quicker, cheaper and far less disruptive, and the bathroom stays as it is. Where the entire surface is tired, we may suggest re-enamelling instead. Our bath repair starts from £95. Compared with replacing, repairing generally costs far less, because nothing has to be taken out, refitted or made good. Your fixed quote shows exactly what’s included.

Looking after it afterwards

So the finish stays in good condition for years:

  • Get a dripping tap fixed promptly
  • Clean with warm water and a mild detergent
  • Ensure an acrylic bath is firm underfoot
  • Avoid scourers, wire wool and gritty cream cleaners

Treat the repaired area like the rest of the bath: warm water, washing-up liquid and a soft cloth. Keep scouring pads and gritty cleaners away from it.

Don’t leave a chip on a steel or cast iron bath. Water gets to the metal and rust starts, turning a quick repair into a bigger one.

Common problems we fix in Lea Valley

The usual cause is something heavy dropped into the bath, and building work is a common culprit. Cracks in acrylic have a different cause: the bath isn’t properly supported, so it flexes under weight.

Look out for any of the following:

  • An old repair that has yellowed or come loose
  • A chipped rim or side
  • Chips caused by builders
  • Scratches you can feel with a fingernail

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether they match the colour on site
  • How the room is protected while they work
  • Whether there are any call-out or travel charges
  • When it can be used again
