Bath repair across AL4: what to expect

It pays to repair bath damage while it’s small. Exposed metal on enamelled baths soon rusts, while cracks in acrylic grow each time the bath moves. Repairing it stops the damage getting worse. We regularly repair whirlpool & spa baths, cast iron enamel and roll-top & freestanding, and people most often call us about a cracked acrylic bath and impact holes in acrylic.

When we visit, the technician arrives at the agreed time, protects the room with dust sheets and masking and gets started. Expect it to take two to three hours for most chips. We clean up when we’re done and let you know when you can use it again.

  1. We protect the bath and the floor around it.
  2. We clean, key and degrease the damage, and any rust is treated.
  3. Filler goes in and is sanded flush once it has set.
  4. Colour and gloss are matched to the surrounding surface.
  5. We clear up and give you the curing time, normally until the day after.

Landmarks near Marshalswick

In Marshalswick, that means homes near Verulam School, St John Fisher Roman Catholic Primary School and Saint Mary's and the streets around them. Nearby too are The Baton pub (within half a mile south), Clarence Park (1.1 miles south-west) and Sandringham School (within half a mile north). The closest station to Marshalswick is St Albans station, about 1.3 miles south-west of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include St Albans Musical Museum (0.8 miles south-west) and The Maltings (1.6 miles south-west). Not far away are The Wick Local Nature Reserve and Verulamium Lake.

Honest limits

Not everything can be repaired, and we’ll tell you before we start. We can’t fix:

  • A bath that flexes because its feet or cradle have failed (that needs fixing first)
  • Cracks in parts of an acrylic bath we cannot get to from below
  • Water coming from the waste or taps rather than the bath

DIY kit or professional repair?

For a hairline mark somewhere you will never see, a kit may be enough. For damage in plain view, cracks, holes or rust, or coloured finishes, a professional repair is worth it.

We understand the appeal of fixing it yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs often look fine at first and then fail, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

Prices and what affects them

Repairs from £95. Each job gets its own fixed quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • What the surface is made of
  • How much damage there is
  • What kind of damage it is
  • How hard the colour is to match

Every job is a little different, so each one is priced on its own. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

Getting a price from pictures

You can take the pictures on your phone. Ensure they show:

  • One sharp close-up of the damage
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale
  • Details of any past repairs
  • Any details about the material

You don’t need a survey visit. Nearly every job can be priced from photos: send a close-up, a wider shot and your postcode, and we will reply with a fixed price.

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Acrylic

Acrylic is light and warm to the touch, but it relies on good support. Repairs to cracks are reinforced from the back.

Composite and resin

Composite baths are dense and solid, and often freestanding. Chips and scratches are filled and matched, just like other baths.

Common problems we fix in AL4

Nearly all the chips we see start with something being dropped: bottles, shower heads, tiles and tools. On enamelled baths, any chip down to the metal will start to rust.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Scuffs and scratches in the surface
  • Impact holes in acrylic
  • Chips caused by builders
  • An old repair that has yellowed or come loose
