How we handle bath repair in Lighthorne

Bath repair is our most common job. A chip by the taps, a crack in the base and a rust spot by the plughole are all fixed without removing the bath, normally in one visit. We regularly repair pressed steel enamel, whirlpool & spa baths and roll-top & freestanding, and common reasons people get in touch are cracks in an acrylic bath and a failed DIY repair that’s discoloured or lifting.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If there is a problem with the repair within the year, we return and sort it.

What we can’t put right

Some problems need a builder, plumber or fitter rather than us:

  • Cracks in acrylic we can’t reach from underneath
  • Water coming from the waste or taps rather than the bath
  • Metal that has corroded all the way through

If in doubt, send photos and we’ll say what we think.

What we’re called out for in Lighthorne

The usual cause is something heavy dropped into the bath, and building work is a common culprit. Cracks in acrylic have a different cause: poor support underneath, so the bath flexes when it’s full.

These are the problems we’re asked about most:

  • A hole punched through by something heavy
  • Scratches you can feel with a fingernail
  • Hairline or through cracks in acrylic
  • An old repair that has yellowed or come loose

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether a trained technician does the job
  • Whether the colour is mixed to match
  • What happens if they find more damage

Questions from Lighthorne

Is a repair better than a new one?

Normally, when the rest is in good condition. A repair avoids removal and making good. If replacing would be better, we will say so.

Can you repair a crack in an acrylic bath?

Generally, yes, as long as we can get to the back of the crack to support it. Check under the bath panel, or send us a picture.

Is my repair covered?

Yes, for a year. If anything goes wrong with the repair within the year, we return to fix it.

How do I book?

Just photos, your postcode and a contact number. On the day, we only need access to the room.

How soon can you come?

We’ll give you dates with your quote. If it’s urgent, say so and we will do what we can.

Can you repair a chip on a coloured bath?

Yes, we match coloured baths too. We tint the finish to your bath on site.

Are you accredited?

We’re accredited with CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile.

Will the price change on the day?

Your quote covers the damage in the pictures. If there’s more, we’ll tell you before starting.

Why repair rather than replace?

When the bath is otherwise sound, repairing beats replacing. It costs less, takes less time and causes far less upheaval, and you keep the bath you chose. If the entire surface is worn, re-enamelling may make more sense, and we will tell you. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. The price depends on the type and amount of damage, what it’s made of and how many items we do on one visit. We give a fixed quote from your pictures, so you know the cost before you book.

Why book with us

  • No need to remove anything
  • Technicians who travel to you, UK-wide

Should I try a DIY kit first?

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For damage in plain view, cracks, holes or rust, or coloured finishes, a professional repair is worth it.

A DIY attempt isn’t a disaster. We remove the old filler and start again, so it won’t stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Acrylic

An acrylic bath is a moulded sheet strengthened from below. There’s no rust, but cracks, holes and scratches happen, and a crack only stays repaired if it’s supported underneath.

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that is the part we put right.

What we do, step by step

Nothing needs to be moved out of the room. Everything we use comes in the van with us, put protection down and start once you are happy with the plan. It generally takes a morning or an afternoon, and you are welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. First, we check the damage against your pictures and agree the plan.
  2. Any rust and loose material comes out, and the area is degreased.
  3. The damage is filled in layers and shaped to the curve of the bath.
  4. We tint the finish by hand to match the bath.
  5. The repair is polished to the same gloss as the bath and left to cure.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about parking, stairs or access
  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing

How to get a price

We price from photos so you do not have to wait in for a survey. Send them through the quote form, or call 0345 017 0787 if you’d rather talk it through.

Advice

Aftercare tips

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Our advice:

  • Clean with warm water and a mild detergent
  • Give the bath a quick rinse after use
  • Do not leave a fresh chip for long
  • Do not leave razors or cans standing in the bath

Look after the repair the same way as the bath: a soft cloth and washing-up liquid is all it needs. Keep scouring pads and gritty cleaners away from it.

Small chips are quick to repair. Left alone, they stain and can rust, so it’s worth getting them done early.
