DIY repairs versus a professional job

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For damage in plain view, cracks, holes or rust, or coloured finishes, a professional repair is worth it.

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The risk is that a kit repair hides the damage for a while, then fails, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

About our bath repair in Mochdre

We see every kind of bath damage: dropped-bottle chips, plughole rust, acrylic cracks and impact holes. All of it is repaired where the bath stands with a one-year guarantee. Whether it’s rust spots around the plughole and deep scratches in acrylic, we can help, on cast iron enamel, acrylic and whirlpool & spa baths alike.

You are covered for a year from the day of the repair. If anything isn’t right, ring us and we’ll come back.

Keeping it looking good

Once the work has cured, treat it gently:

  • Get a dripping tap fixed promptly
  • Use a soft cloth and washing-up liquid for everyday cleaning
  • Do not leave a fresh chip for long
  • Rinse it down after each bath

Clean with mild, non-abrasive cleaners and try not to drop heavy bottles on the repair. Get any new chip seen to quickly, before rust sets in.

If water is getting through a crack, stop using the bath until it’s repaired. Leaks under a bath can damage floors and ceilings.

Should you replace it?

A repair makes sense whenever the damage is localised. It costs far less than a new bath plus fitting, it’s done in one visit, and nothing else in the room changes. Prices start from £95. What it costs depends on how much damage there is and what kind, the material and how many jobs we combine into one visit. We give a fixed quote from your photos, so you know the cost before booking.

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Composite and resin

Stone resin and composite baths are heavy and solid, and often freestanding. Chips and scratches are filled and matched, in much the same way.

Acrylic

An acrylic bath is a moulded sheet strengthened from below. There is no rust, but cracks, holes and scratches happen, and cracks need support from behind to stay fixed.

When a repair is not the answer

We won’t take on work that won’t last, so here’s what a repair cannot put right:

  • Acrylic cracks with no access behind them
  • A bath that moves underfoot, until its support is fixed
  • Water coming from the waste or taps rather than the bath

If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think.

Materials we work on in Mochdre

  • Cast iron enamel
  • Roll-top & freestanding
  • Pressed steel enamel
  • Acrylic
  • Whirlpool & spa baths

What happens on the day

A typical visit goes like this: we arrive at the agreed slot, sheet and mask the area around the job, carry out the work and tidy away. Allow two to three hours for most chips. Before we go, we’ll explain when it can be used and what to avoid for the first few days.

  1. First, the area is cleaned and any loose enamel or rust is removed.
  2. Next we fill the damage and sand it smooth and level.
  3. We tint the finish on the day to suit your bath’s shade of white or colour.
  4. We apply the finish coats and polish the repair so it blends in.
  5. We leave it to cure; you can normally use the bath the next day.

Before we arrive

  • Have somewhere for us to park nearby if possible
  • Mention if the room is upstairs or in a flat
  • Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing

Glass and heavy bottles cause more chips than anything else, with dropped shower heads close behind. Taps and wastes cause problems too: water sits around them, and any chip there soon rusts.

10 questions to ask before booking

FAQs for Mochdre

Can you fix rust around the plughole?

Yes. We remove the rust and loose enamel, seal and fill the area, then colour-match the finish.

Do I have to be there?

Someone needs to let us in and show us the job. You do not need to watch us work.

What areas do you cover?

The entire UK, including all of Conwy. Just include your postcode and we will confirm dates.

Do you come to Mochdre?

Yes. We cover the entire UK and come to Mochdre. Send pictures and we will quote, or call 0345 017 0787.

Is a bath repair permanent?

It should, as long as the bath is firm and the area was prepared well. It carries our one-year guarantee.

Is a repair better than a new one?

Generally, yes. Replacement brings removal, refitting and making good, which a repair avoids. If it isn’t worth repairing, we will tell you.

Is my repair covered?

Every repair comes with a one-year guarantee. We’ll explain what it covers when we quote.

How soon can you come?

It depends on the time of year and where you are. We’ll offer you dates when we send your quote.

What affects the price in Mochdre

Repairs from £95. Each job gets its own fixed quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • The material
  • The type of damage
  • How hard the colour is to match
  • Access to the area

Instead of hourly rates, we fix the price before we start. It depends on the damage, the material and access, and combining items on one visit brings it down.

Send pictures for a quote

The better the pictures, the more accurate the price. Here’s what helps:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any earlier repairs or coatings
  • A photo taken from further back
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale

Ring 0345 017 0787, or send us photos through the quote form. With one close-up and one wider picture, we can give you a fixed quote the same day in most cases.
