Bath repair in Newport

Different materials, different repairs

Composite and resin

Stone resin and composite baths are heavy and solid, and frequently freestanding. Chips and scratches can be filled and colour matched, just like other baths.

Pressed steel

Steel baths and trays have a thin metal body under the enamel. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so the metal is treated and sealed before the repair.

About our bath repair in Newport

A typical bath repair is a few hours’ work, and you can typically bathe again the day after. There is no need to book a plumber or tiler, because the bath doesn’t move. Our technicians work on acrylic, cast iron enamel and roll-top & freestanding, and the jobs we see most are impact holes in acrylic and snagging damage from a refit.

Big or small, you get the same one-year guarantee.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. The trouble is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler frequently lifts.

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Doing it properly first is usually the cheaper route.

How to look after the repair

It’s all simple stuff:

  • Keep abrasive pads and gritty cleaners away from the bath
  • Don’t leave a fresh chip for long
  • Rinse the bath after use, especially in hard water areas
  • Use a soft cloth and washing-up liquid for everyday cleaning

Leave the repair to cure for as long as we say before running a bath. From then on, mild cleaning is all it needs.

Small chips are quick to repair. Leave them and they collect dirt, stain and, on metal baths, rust, so it’s worth getting them done early.

For landlords and businesses

Hospitality businesses need rooms back in use quickly, so most of our work is done in a single visit. We’ll fit around changeovers where we can.

We work for landlords, letting agents and housing providers in Newport as well as homeowners. Repairing between tenancies keeps void periods short, and it usually costs far less than a refit.

When we would advise against a repair

Some problems need a builder, plumber or fitter rather than us:

  • Cracks in parts of an acrylic bath we can’t get to from below
  • Leaking fittings, which need a plumber
  • Metal that has corroded all the way through

If in doubt, send photos and we will say what we think before booking.

What we work on

  • Pressed steel enamel
  • Cast iron enamel
  • Acrylic
  • Roll-top & freestanding
  • Whirlpool & spa baths

What we do, step by step

We work cleanly and quietly, so you can stay at home while we are there. Protection goes down first, then the job itself takes a morning or an afternoon. At the end we talk you through how soon it can be used and how to look after it.

  1. We start by cleaning the damage and taking out loose enamel and rust.
  2. We fill the damage and sand it flush with the surrounding surface.
  3. The colour is mixed on the spot to match your bath.
  4. We build up the finish and polish it into the surrounding enamel.
  5. We leave it to cure; you can generally use the bath the day after.

How to prepare

  • Make sure the room can be ventilated
  • Clear the area around the damage
  • Tell us about any previous repairs or coatings

Repair or replace: which is better?

Cast iron baths in particular are worth repairing: they’re very heavy to remove, especially upstairs, and a like-for-like replacement can be expensive. A repair keeps it in place. Our bath repair starts from £95. Compared with replacing, a repair is normally a fraction of the price, because nothing has to be taken out, refitted or made good. The quote lists exactly what you are paying for.

Why choose Surface Doctor in Newport

  • No extra charge for your area
  • Colour mixed on the day to match
