Bath repair in North Blyth

Bath repair in North Blyth, done in place

Small damage on a bath is worth repairing early. On steel and cast iron, exposed metal starts to rust, while cracks in acrylic grow each time the bath moves. Repairing it stops the damage getting worse. We work on cast iron enamel, roll-top & freestanding and pressed steel enamel, and the jobs we see most are a chipped rim or side and rusty patches near the plughole.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If something isn’t right in that time, we come back and put it right.

What your bath is made of matters

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that’s what we repair.

Pressed steel

Pressed steel is thinner and lighter, with an enamel finish like cast iron. Exposed steel rusts fast, especially around the waste, so early repairs matter.

Repair or replace: which is better?

Cast iron baths in particular are worth repairing: they’re very heavy to remove, especially upstairs, and replacing like for like isn’t cheap. Repairing it leaves it where it is. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. Rather than charging by the hour, we fix the price before we start. It depends on the damage, the material and access.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

What a professional repair adds is preparation, colour matching and finishing. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, then guarantee it for a year.

If you are set on a kit, follow its instructions closely, and give it the full curing time. If it doesn’t work out, we can still repair it properly.

The process

When we visit, we arrive at the time we have agreed, cover the area with dust sheets and masking, and set to work. The job usually takes a morning or an afternoon. We tidy up before we leave and let you know when you can use it again.

  1. First, the area is cleaned and any loose enamel or rust is removed.
  2. Next we fill the damage and sand it smooth and level.
  3. We mix the colour on the day to match your bath’s exact shade.
  4. We apply the finish coats and polish the repair so it blends in.
  5. Once it has cured, generally by the following day, the bath is ready to use.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about parking, stairs or access
  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area
  • Keep pets and children out of the room while we work

Getting a price

You do not need a survey visit. Photos are enough for us to price nearly every job: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we will reply with a fixed price.

Keeping it looking good

Most damage we see is avoidable. A few tips:

  • Keep abrasive pads and gritty cleaners away from the bath
  • Don’t leave razors or cans standing in the bath
  • If an acrylic bath flexes, have its feet adjusted
  • Protect the bath with a towel when doing jobs nearby

Use gentle, non-abrasive cleaners and try not to drop heavy bottles on the repair. Deal with new chips early, before rust sets in.

A chip on a metal bath shouldn’t be left. Water gets to the metal and rust starts, and a rust spot is a bigger repair than a clean chip.

Signs you need bath repair in North Blyth

A bath gets knocked about more than you’d think: everyday items get dropped into it all the time, and taps and wastes are tightened against the surface. Over time, chips and rust spots are almost inevitable.

Look out for any of the following:

  • A hole punched through by something heavy
  • Rust by the waste and overflow
  • An old repair that has yellowed or come loose
  • Hairline or through cracks in acrylic

What we can’t put right

A few problems are outside what a surface repair can do:

  • Cracks in acrylic we can’t reach from underneath
  • A bath that flexes because its feet or cradle have failed (that needs fixing first)
  • Leaks from the waste or overflow fittings (a plumber’s job)

If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think.
