How we handle bath repair in Sunderland

Small damage on a bath is worth repairing early. On steel and cast iron, exposed metal starts to rust, while cracks in acrylic grow each time the bath moves. A repair stops both. We’re frequently asked to fix an old repair that has yellowed or come loose and a chip where the taps sit, on whirlpool & spa baths, acrylic and pressed steel enamel.

All of our repairs are guaranteed for twelve months, and the guarantee is the same wherever you live. We return to put right any problem with the work.

Rusty chip next to a bath plughole, before and after repair

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Pressed steel

Pressed steel is thinner and lighter, with an enamel finish like cast iron. Chips rust quickly on steel, particularly by the plughole, so early repairs matter.

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that’s what we repair.

Sunderland: your questions answered

Can you redo an old repair?

Yes. We remove the old filler and start again. Tell us about it when you send photos.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

In most cases, yes. A repair skips the removal, fitting and redecorating. We’ll be honest if it’s not worth it.

Are you a vetted contractor?

We are accredited with CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile.

Can a cracked acrylic bath be fixed?

Most of the time. The back of the crack is strengthened before the front is filled and refinished, so access behind the panel is important.

Will I be able to see the repair?

The goal is a repair that blends in. The rest of the bath’s condition makes a difference, and we’ll tell you what to expect.

How long before I can use the bath?

Generally the following day. We’ll tell you the exact curing time when we finish.

Are there extra charges for Sunderland?

We do not add a call-out fee. The fixed quote covers the visit and the work.

Do you repair coloured baths?

Yes. We mix the colour on the day to match, including pastel and older colours.

What bath repair costs

Repairs from £95. There are no hourly rates or hidden extras. The price is based on:

  • The material and finish
  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • Unusual colours or finishes
  • How many items we do on one visit

Every job is a little different, so each one is priced on its own. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

Getting a price from photos

We price nearly every job from pictures. This is what we need:

  • Details of any past repairs
  • One picture of the entire bath
  • Natural light rather than flash
  • A close-up of the damage, in focus

Upload pictures of the damage and a wider shot of the entire item, and tell us you’re in Sunderland, and we will come back with a fixed quote.

DIY kit or professional repair?

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We prepare the area properly, mix the colour on site and polish the finish to match, and the work is guaranteed.

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Doing it properly first is typically the cheaper route.

The process

You don’t need to empty the room. We bring everything we need with us, lay protective sheets and get going once we’ve agreed what we’re doing. It normally takes two to three hours for most chips, and you can get on with other things while we are there.

  1. First, we check the damage against your photos and agree the plan.
  2. Any rust and loose material comes out, and the area is degreased.
  3. We build up the filler in layers, shaping it to the bath.
  4. We tint the finish by hand to match the bath.
  5. The repair is polished to the same gloss as the bath and left to cure.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about parking, stairs or access
  • Tell us about any previous repairs or coatings
  • Clear the area around the damage

Getting a price

There is no need for us to visit first. Nearly every job can be priced from photos: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we will reply with a fixed price.

When a repair is not the answer

A repair is not always the answer, and we’d rather say so up front. Repairs will not solve:

  • Acrylic cracks with no access behind them
  • A bath that flexes because its feet or cradle have failed (that needs fixing first)
  • A whole bath that’s dull or worn, where a full re-enamel is the better fix

Send us photos and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

What we work on

  • Pressed steel enamel
  • Cast iron enamel
  • Acrylic
  • Whirlpool & spa baths
  • Roll-top & freestanding

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:

  • Have new chips seen to early
  • Rinse it down after each bath
  • Don’t scrub with anything abrasive
  • Cover the bath during DIY or decorating

Do not leave razors, cans or hair grips in the bath, because they can mark the enamel. And fix dripping taps promptly.

A chip on a metal bath shouldn’t be left. Water gets to the metal and rust starts, and a rust spot is a bigger repair than a clean chip.

Repair or replace: which is better?

When the bath is otherwise sound, repairing beats replacing. It’s quicker, cheaper and far less disruptive, and you keep the bath you chose. Where the entire surface is tired, we may suggest re-enamelling instead. Prices start from £95. The price depends on the type and amount of damage, what it’s made of and how many items we do on one visit. You get a fixed quote from your photos, so there are no surprises on the day.
