The process

A typical visit goes like this: we arrive on time, sheet and mask the area around the job, carry out the work and tidy away. Plan for two to three hours for most chips. Before we go, we’ll explain how long to leave it and what to avoid for the first few days.

  1. Dust sheets and masking go down around the bath.
  2. The damaged area is cleaned, keyed and degreased, and any rust is treated.
  3. We fill it, let it set, then sand it flush.
  4. Colour and gloss are matched to the surrounding surface.
  5. We clear up and give you the curing time, normally until the day after.

Advice

Keeping it looking good

After the repair has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • A dripping tap stains enamel, so fix it early
  • If an acrylic bath flexes, have its feet adjusted
  • Keep abrasive pads and gritty cleaners away from the bath
  • Store metal items away from the bath

Do not leave razors, cans or hair grips in the bath, as they can leave rust marks. A dripping tap should be fixed early, too.

A chip on a metal bath shouldn’t be left. Water gets to the metal and rust starts, and a rust spot is a bigger repair than a clean chip.

Repair or replace: which is better?

Cast iron baths in particular are worth repairing: they’re very heavy to remove, especially upstairs, and replacing like for like is not cheap. A repair keeps it in place. Prices start from £95. Every job is a little different, so we price each one individually. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

When to call us in Tallington

The usual cause is something heavy dropped into the bath, and a lot happen during bathroom refits. Cracks in acrylic have a different cause: poor support underneath, so the bath flexes when it’s full.

Most people contact us when they notice one of these:

  • A chipped rim or side
  • A failed DIY repair that’s discoloured or lifting
  • Cracks in an acrylic bath
  • A chip where the taps sit

How to compare quotes

Can I fix it myself?

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it won’t stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs often look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

Repairs by material

Pressed steel

Pressed steel is thinner and lighter, with an enamel finish like cast iron. Exposed steel rusts fast, especially around the waste, so repair chips early.

Composite and resin

Stone resin and composite baths are heavy and solid, and often freestanding. Chips and scratches are filled and matched, in much the same way.

What affects the price in Tallington

Repairs from £95. Every quote is fixed and free. What we look at:

  • Any earlier repairs that need removing first
  • How hard the colour is to match
  • How many areas need work
  • What the surface is made of

Our prices are the same across the UK, so there’s no premium for Tallington. What changes the price is the job itself: how much damage, what it’s made of and how many items.

Getting a price from photos

Good photos mean an accurate price. Here’s what helps:

  • Any earlier repairs or coatings
  • Natural light rather than flash
  • The material, if you know it
  • Your postcode, so we can check dates

Getting a price is easy: snap the damage close up and then the entire item, send them over with your postcode, and you will get a fixed price back. There’s no charge for the quote and no obligation.

Tallington questions

What information do you need?

Use the quote form or ring 0345 017 0787.

Can tenants book a repair?

Of course. Check with your landlord; we can send the quote to them too.

You will get a fixed quote back. There’s no obligation to book.

Is repairing better than replacing?

Generally, if the item is otherwise sound. A repair avoids removal and making good. If replacing would be better, we will say so.

Which areas do you work in?

The whole UK, including all of Lincolnshire. Send your postcode with your photos and we will offer you dates.

What happens if you find more damage?

Your quote covers the damage in the photos. If there is more, we’ll tell you before starting.

When we’d advise against a repair

It helps to know what we cannot do:

  • Cracks in parts of an acrylic bath we can’t get to from below
  • Wear across the whole surface, which needs re-enamelling
  • Rust that has eaten right through a steel bath

Not sure? Send pictures and we will give you a straight answer.
