Morton on the Hill questions

Is repairing better than replacing?

In most cases, yes. Replacement brings removal, refitting and making good, which a repair avoids. If it isn’t worth repairing, we will tell you.

Will you leave a mess?

Dust sheets and masking go down before we start, and tidy up before we leave.

Do you charge for travel?

No. Our quotes include travel, with the same prices everywhere we work.

Do you work in Morton on the Hill?

We do. Repair technicians travel to Morton on the Hill from across the region, with no extra charge for travel.

Do I have to be there?

Yes. The technician needs access to the room for the visit, at a time we agree with you.

It’s been repaired before. Can you still fix it?

Yes, regularly. It can add a little time, which we include in the quote.

Can you price it without visiting?

In nearly every case. We only ask to see it in person if the pictures cannot show what we need.

Can you do more than one item on the same visit?

Yes, and it’s frequently cheaper. Send pictures of everything together and we’ll quote them together.

We cut out all of the old sealant, treat any mould, and reseal with new mould-resistant silicone. We do this for baths, showers, sinks and worktops, and that includes the awkward spots behind the taps. We regularly repair baths, shower trays & enclosures and wet rooms, and people most often call us about missing sealant behind the taps and stained silicone.

How it works

From the moment we arrive, the aim is to do the job without disturbing the rest of your home. We mask off everything nearby, the work takes about two hours for a bath, depending on what we find, and we finish with a tidy-up and a look at the finished work together.

  1. We cut out all of the old sealant.
  2. We remove the residue and clean the joint.
  3. We treat mould and dry the joint thoroughly.
  4. We fill the bath, or weight the tray, to open the joint.
  5. We apply fresh mould-resistant silicone and tool a neat bead.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets and children out of the room while we work
  • Open a window if you can
  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area

Advice

Should I try a DIY kit first?

A DIY attempt isn’t a disaster. We remove the old filler and start again, so it won’t stop us repairing it. Just mention it when you send photos, as it can add time.

You can buy a DIY kit for most repairs, and they can make a small mark look better. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler often lifts.

Is resealing worth it?

Resealing costs very little and protects the walls and floor. Failed sealant can lead to water damage that is much more expensive. It helps to know what pushes a price up or down: access, material, the extent of the damage and whether we can do several items together. Send pictures and you’ll get a fixed figure.

How to look after the repair

How the surface is treated afterwards matters. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Keep the joints dry
  • Air the room after use
  • Use the extractor fan
  • Do not stand toiletries on the seal

Run the extractor fan, wipe the joints dry after use, and clean them regularly with a mild cleaner to slow mould growth.

Damp below or loose tiles need checking quickly. It may be more than a reseal, so we will tell you if it needs a builder or plumber.
