Bath resealing for Thorn homes

About our bath resealing in Thorn

Resealing is one of the simplest ways to protect your bathroom. Old, split or mouldy sealant lets water get behind the bath or tray, and a new seal stops it. If you are dealing with gaps in the seal and gaps by the taps, we can help, on wet rooms, basins & vanity units and shower trays & enclosures alike.

We guarantee the work for a year. If something is not right in that time, we come back and put it right.

How to look after the repair

Looking after the surface is easy, and it makes a real difference:

  • Use the extractor fan
  • Replace the seal when mould sets in
  • Do not stand toiletries on the seal
  • Clean the sealant gently and regularly

Leave the sealant to cure for the time we give you, normally about a day.

If you notice damp, stains on the ceiling below or loose tiles, act quickly. It may be more than a reseal, and we’ll say if you need a builder or plumber.

What bath resealing costs

We charge the same across the UK, including Thorn. The price reflects:

  • What the surface is made of
  • Access to the area
  • Any earlier repairs that need removing first
  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear

We don’t add extras on the day. The price we quote from your photos is the price you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.

Getting a price from pictures

Most quotes are done from pictures alone. To help us price it:

  • What it’s made of, if you know
  • Daylight if possible, and no flash reflection
  • Whether it’s been repaired or coated before
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

For a price in Thorn, pictures are the quickest way: a close-up, a wider shot and your postcode. You’ll get a fixed quote with dates to choose from.

The process

On the day itself, there’s little for you to do. Show us the job, point us to the room, and we’ll take it from there. Most visits take a couple of hours, including clearing up.

  1. The old silicone is cut out completely.
  2. Residue is removed and the joint cleaned.
  3. We treat mould and dry the joint thoroughly.
  4. The bath is filled with water, or weight put on the tray.
  5. New mould-resistant silicone is applied and tooled neatly.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Have a window or extractor fan available
  • Tell us about parking, stairs or access
  • Mention if the room is upstairs or in a flat

Sinks and worktops

We reseal basins, vanity tops and kitchen worktops, with the joint fully dried first.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but the repairs we redo most often are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Doing it properly first is typically the cheaper route.

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

Why reseal now?

Sealing over old silicone is a false economy. It soon peels, and mould stays trapped behind it. We remove the old sealant completely. No two jobs are quite the same, so each one is priced on its own. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down.

Why us?

  • CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited
  • No need to remove anything

What we’re called out for in Thorn

Sealant splits when the bath or tray moves, often because it was sealed with the bath empty.

If you can see any of these, send us a picture:

  • Silicone coming away from the tiles
  • Unsealed corners
  • Discoloured, yellow sealant
  • Damp near the bath

Choosing a repair company

Thorn: your questions answered

How long does a reseal take?

Most reseals take about two hours. It then needs time to cure.

Does someone need to be in?

Yes. We need access to the room while we work, at a time that suits you.

It’s been repaired before. Can you still fix it?

In most cases. We remove the old repair before doing a new one, so let us know about it.

How long before I can shower?

We’ll give you the curing time, generally around a day.

Can pets and children be at home?

On the day, the room should be kept clear of pets and children.

Are there extra charges for Thorn?

We do not add a call-out fee. The fixed price covers the visit and the work.

Why does the silicone keep cracking?

Something is moving. Persistent splitting can mean the support needs attention.

Are you accredited?

We’re accredited with CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile.

When a repair isn’t the answer

In fairness, there are a few things a repair will not fix:

  • Rotten walls or floors behind the bath
  • Loose tiles, which need refixing first
  • Gaps too big for silicone alone

If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think.
