Repairing versus replacing in The Knap

Swapping a coloured suite for a white one means new sanitaryware, a plumber and a tiler. Resurfacing changes the colour without taking anything out. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. Rather than charging by the hour, we fix the price before we start. It depends on the damage, the material and access, and doing several items at once reduces it.

Why choose Surface Doctor in The Knap

  • Repair technicians who travel to you, UK-wide
  • One visit for most repairs
  • No need to remove anything
  • Honest advice, even when it means no job

How we handle coloured bath resurfacing in The Knap

Everything is resurfaced where it stands, so there’s no plumbing or tiling. A full suite is typically done in one to two days. We regularly repair coloured basins, avocado, pampas and pink baths and coloured shower trays, and common reasons people get in touch are a suite that doesn’t match a new bathroom and a dated coloured suite you’d like in white.

All our work comes with our one-year guarantee. Look after the new finish like a re-enamelled bath: gentle cleaners, no suction mats.

What we do, step by step

Arrival times are agreed in advance, so you know when to expect us. Once we are there, the work takes one to two days for a full suite. The room is left tidy and ready to use once it has cured.

  1. First we protect the bathroom and set up ventilation.
  2. Each item is cleaned, degreased and any chips repaired.
  3. We prepare the surface and apply a bonding primer.
  4. We spray the new white (or other colour) finish.
  5. Each item is left to cure, generally ready the day after.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about parking, stairs or access
  • Clear toiletries, mats and anything else from around the area
  • Ensure the area is dry

Getting a price

Getting a quote takes a couple of minutes: photograph the damage, then the whole suite, include your postcode and send them to us. What comes back is a fixed price, not a guess.

Related advice

Can I fix it myself?

If you are set on a kit, follow its instructions closely, and give it the full curing time. If it does not work out, we can still repair it properly.

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

Signs you need coloured bath resurfacing in The Knap

Avocado, pampas and pink suites were everywhere in the 70s and 80s, and plenty are still in good condition. It’s typically the colour that dates them, not the condition.

Most people get in touch when they notice one of these:

  • Faded or patchy colour
  • Selling or letting a home with an old suite
  • A dated coloured suite you’d like in white
  • A suite that doesn’t match a new bathroom

Questions from The Knap

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. We work for landlords, agents, builders and businesses as well as homeowners.

Is there any odour?

There may be a mild smell during the work, which fades afterwards.

Which areas do you work in?

The whole UK, including all of the Vale of Glamorgan. Send your postcode with your photos and we will offer you dates.

Is a repair better than a new one?

Typically, if the item is otherwise sound. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. We will tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.

Do you hold any accreditations?

Yes, including CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor. See our accreditations page for the full list.

Does someone need to be in?

Yes. We need access to the room while we work, at a time that suits you.

What information do you need?

Just pictures, your postcode and a contact number. On the day, access to the room.

Will it make a mess?

We protect the room with dust sheets and masking first, and we clean up when we’ve finished.

Honest limits

A repair is not always the answer, and we would rather say so up front. Repairs won’t solve:

  • The inside of a toilet bowl, unless we’ve agreed it will last
  • Items cracked right through
  • Fittings and taps (these are masked, not recoloured)

Send us photos and we’ll tell you honestly.

What affects the price in The Knap

Prices start from £350. Each job gets its own fixed quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • Whether old repairs or coatings need taking off
  • What kind of damage it is
  • How hard the colour is to match
  • What the surface is made of

A repair generally costs much less than people expect, especially compared with replacing and refitting. Photos let us give you the exact figure.

Send photos for a quote

Two or three clear photos are normally enough. Try to include:

  • Whether it’s been repaired or coated before
  • What it’s made of, if you know
  • A close-up of the damage, in focus
  • One picture of the whole suite

Send us a picture of the damage and one of the entire item, and tell us you are in The Knap, and we will come back with a fixed quote.
