About bath repair in IP22

Most of our bath repairs take a few hours, and the bath is back in use the day after. You won’t need a plumber or tiler, because the bath does not move. We work on cast iron enamel, whirlpool & spa baths and pressed steel enamel, and people most frequently call us about cracks in an acrylic bath and chips caused by builders.

A typical visit goes like this: we arrive on time, protect everything around the work area, carry out the work and clear up. Plan for a morning or an afternoon. Before we go, we’ll explain when it can be used and what to avoid for the first few days.

  1. We protect the bath and the floor around it.
  2. We clean, key and degrease the damage, and any rust is treated.
  3. We fill it, let it set, then sand it flush.
  4. We match both the colour and the shine.
  5. We tidy up and tell you when the bath can be used, generally the day after.

What it costs in IP22

Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. No two jobs are quite the same, so each one is priced on its own. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all play a part, and combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down.

How to look after the repair

Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:

  • Give the bath a quick rinse after use
  • Do not leave razors or cans standing in the bath
  • Get any new chip repaired before it rusts
  • Use a soft cloth and washing-up liquid for everyday cleaning

Look after the repair the same way as the bath: warm water, washing-up liquid and a soft cloth. Keep scouring pads and gritty cleaners away from it.

Avoid standing in a cracked acrylic bath until it’s fixed. Each time it flexes, the crack grows, and water can get through to the floor below.

Different materials, different repairs

Cast iron

Cast iron is heavy and rigid, with a fused enamel surface. Chips can rust if left, but the bath itself lasts for generations, which makes it well worth repairing.

Pressed steel

Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Once a chip exposes it, rust follows quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.

How the damage happens

Nearly all the chips we see start with something being dropped: a shampoo bottle, a shower head, a tile or a tool during a refit. On steel and cast iron baths, a chip that reaches the metal will start to rust.

If you can see any of these, send us a photo:

  • Damage beneath the taps
  • Snagging damage from a refit
  • A hole punched through by something heavy
  • An old repair that has yellowed or come loose

Can I fix it myself?

We understand the appeal of fixing it yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs often look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can make a small mark look better. The trouble is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler frequently lifts.
